About Annette

Hello parents and students!

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to tell you a little about myself. School can be an exhilarating as well as a downright frustrating endeavor to embark on, particularly when the subject is difficult and the obstacles seem insurmountable. It is for this reason that I realize the gravity of trust that is placed in the hands of a tutor to provide some much needed insight, tools and techniques for learning, and sometimes just a person with whom to commiserate.

A little of my background experience in tutoring:

My first tutoring experience included being an English and math tutor at a private college in Kansas City, Kansas while completing my Bachelor's degree there. After acquiring my Bachelor's in Psychology, I began tutoring privately at the homes of my students ranging from 1st grade all the way through college as well as for adult learners looking to complete their degrees. My educational background in Psychology has helped me learn many techniques and tools that allow me customize my tutoring approach to meet each individual student's needs. My extensive exposure to students with learning disabilities has added greatly to my personal commitment to those for whom learning can be a unique challenge. It has also provided me with many opportunities to learn a variety of methods and techniques that I can employ with great success.

As an individual who was raised in another culture and as the daughter of missionary parents, I am sensitive to the diverse social and cultural backgrounds of those I tutor and interact with.

Again, thank you for taking the time to read a little about my experiences and qualifications. I look forward to the responsibility of helping you or your child to experience the profound joy and feeling of accomplishment that accompanies academic success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I am requesting certification as a tutor in this subject because of my relevant career experience and academic education in the subject:

(a) 3 years as a Military Police officer in US Army

(b) Acquisition of 27 Credit Hours from Columbia College in the subject of Criminal Justice, resulting in the addition of the Minor of Criminal Justice to my final Bachelor's Degree.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a private tutor, I have tutored children as young as 6 years old in reading (phonics), writing, and math since 2013. I have extensive experience with children who have learning disabilities including ADD, ADHD, auditory/visual processing disorders, and dyslexia. By using creative, hands on kinesthetic learning techniques, in addition to Brain Integration Therapy techniques first used by Dianne Craft, I have been able to effectively help children of various elementary ages learn techniques and strategies to overcome learning barriers and successfully accomplish their academic goals.

Public Speaking

I am certified to tutor in public speaking based upon the following career and education related qualifications:

(a) leadership role in the military resulted in me conducting oral presentations for the purpose of training soldiers with audiences as small as 5 to as large as 100 soldiers

(b) as a result of achieving a minor in mgmt and a bachelor's in Psychology I have given over 30 presentations to classes of students

(c) I have successfully completed a speech class as part of my academic curriculum at Columbia College

Study Skills

I am certified for tutoring study skills based on my qualifications as a full time student who has balanced family, a career, and academic pursuits while maintaining a 3.85 GPA and Dean's list status at my college. In addition to my own personal experiences as a student which have developed my study skills, I have also learned much about effective studying techniques and learning in general from my Psychology courses.

I am certified to tutor Volleyball as a result of having played volleyball competitively throughout my junior and high school years in addition to leagues while stationed at various duty stations while I was in the military.

I have extensive experience in all aspects of composing, proofreading, and editing written work including:

~ Vocabulary, Grammar, Sentence Structure, and Comprehensive Components of Writing
~ Conducting Research for Term Papers
~ Implementing MLA and APA formats for referencing and citing sources
~ Compiling Essays: Informative, Persuasive, Cause & Effect

Engaging and patient

We have been very pleasantly surprised by Annette's approach in teaching our 6th grade son. She was very organized from the time we interviewed her. She assessed the way he learns, she harnessed his attention and engaged him in a manner that left him feeling good about himself and wanting to learn and prove to himself he can do more!
