About Terri

Hi, my name is Terri. I taught high school in Houston for six years before moving to Longview. I then ran a business for twenty years before getting back into teaching. In 1996, I taught English for students with problems in comprehension and students who could not stay on task. I feel like the students were better prepared for their junior year after my six months with them. I have been substitute teaching for the past five years, but enjoy working one on one. I would always come into school early and stay late to give my students the one on one attention they needed. Many of my students went from 6th grade reading level to 9th grade level in the year I worked with them. I enjoy working with students and enjoy seeing them succeed. Hi, my name is Terri. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Depending on the reading level, a student can upgrade their skills by reading aloud. Questioning the child about the reading material will help them remember the material. Memorizing techniques are useful when remembering dates and names. Simplifying mathematical skills will help the student understand the process.

Phonics

I am a certified English teacher and am sufficient in phonics, having taught reading skills in the public school system. Phonics is the pronunciation of words and forming sounds with combination of letters.

Reading

Reading aloud is the most efficient tool to solving a reader's weaknesses. When one can hear himself read he can correct his mistakes and pronounce the difficult words aloud. The comprehension improves which improves his confidence in his ability to read

Study Skills

To stay on task by using different learning techniques is my approach to developing good study skills. A student must have a quiet place to do their work. One must also have all assignment requirements available when studying. In order to remember dates and events one can memorize whether by rhyming or by a melody. One can also use things they are familiar with to remember things. By sticking to a schedule it becomes much easier to succeed. A daily routine is a must when implementing these skills.
