I am currently working as a Response to Intervention Specialist, which is teaching in small groups and tutoring. I have taught as a classroom teacher and a special education resource teacher with groups of ten to twelve, and although I've always loved teaching, tutoring gives me more fulfillment because I can see the greater impact I have on students. I have been trained in diagnosing specific deficits in reading and using phonics to build foundational skills that will lead to fluent reading.

My Master's degree is in education with an emphasis on literacy, because I believe that to teach someone to read well is to give them the keys to a well-rounded education and success in life.

I am certified in English from grades 4-12, as a generalist for grades K-6, and in special education grades K-12. I have worked with students of all ages, Kindergarten through adulthood, and taught math through middle school and beginning algebra. Reading, however, is my specialty.

My training in elementary literacy has been extensive and I love to teach students how to read, how to comprehend what they read, and to learn new vocabulary. I am a skilled grammarian and familiar with children's literature as well as young adult.

If you need help or find reading difficult, please contact me. I would be so happy to meet you and be your tutor.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold the K-6 generalist certification, for which I had to pass tests in elementary level Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science. I have taught Math to middle school special education resource classes, and I am now teaching/tutoring math at the K-2 level in my Response to Intervention pullout groups. I also spent one year working as a paraprofessional tutoring 9th grade students in math before I got my teaching certifications.

I homeschooled one of my daughters all the way through school because public school wasn't a good fit for her. I designed her curriculum myself and used released state tests to assess her skills in the main areas. I used materials I got from teacher supply stores and online resources for the most part.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

Included in my special education and 504 training is the teaching of ADHD children, and as ADHD runs through my extended family, I have a lot of experience with these challenges. My teaching strategies are to use multisensory lessons, limit auditory and visual distractions, and provide a structured environment where children can focus better.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My special education certification included autistic and emotionally disturbed children, and my background in psychology helps me in that area. I have experience in working with both of these groups of students, at all grade levels. I have done extensive research in working with these challenging students and I feel quite comfortable with my skills.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I have had training in working with dyslexic students and spent a year teaching a separate class for those students diagnosed with dyslexia. Many of the strategies are the same you would use for students with specific learning disabilities, and research shows that the best way to teach dyslexic students to read well is to use a systematic phonics based curriculum with a multisensory approach. Anchoring visual and auditory information with kinesthetic motions proves to give a solid core foundation for these students. Beginning with phonemic awareness, moving to phonics, and adding spelling patterns and vocabulary form a solid base, upon which to build oral fluency and reading comprehension skills. I have been to several conferences on testing and teaching this group of students.

I am certified to teach special education students with specific learning disabilities, and have taught reading and math to those students. My experience has been in high school, middle school, and elementary school. Included in this certification is the teaching of ADHD children, and as ADHD runs through my extended family, I have a lot of experience with these challenges. My teaching strategies are to use multisensory lessons, limit auditory and visual distractions, and provide a structured environment where children can focus better. I give many opportunities for students to practice skills, using worksheets, manipulatives, activities, games, and interactive whiteboard, and I give frequent and immediate feedback.
