About Emalie

Dear Prospective Student,

Hooray! If you are viewing this page, that means you are interested in looking for some help in improving your English skills! That could include writing, reading, reading comprehension, literature, vocabulary, spelling, or anything else that falls under the large umbrella of English.

To tell you a little about myself, I have about 3-4 years of tutoring experience. Two of those years I spent tutoring at the Write To Excellence Center at McNeese State University, where I was then attending college. I specifically tutored in writing and critical thinking, but I didn't just tutor students who were in English classes or majoring English. I tutored students who needed help with writing in all subjects, from the sciences to history to math and so forth. Writing is a very important skill to learn across all areas of study because it is a very strong form of communication. It enables you to strengthen the speech you want to present in order to encourage supporters to a cause that is close to your heart. You see, the best speeches, before they are ever spoken, they are written. Writing enables you to grab the attention of readers of all subjects, thoughts, and ideas. It will take you much farther than you ever thought you could go. It can reach around the world. Words have meanings. Words can change lives. Words can reach people. (I could literally go on and on about words because I love words! They are valuable to me!) Anyways...moving on.

I have tutored elementary after-school students in most subjects at a local Montessori school. I have also tutored 2nd and 3rd grade math within one particular school in our Livingston Independent School District. Currently, I work as a "full-time" substitute in the same district. This has given me great opportunity to connect with students in every grade level! I am able to be directly in the classroom watching how the students learn and seeing first-hand the topics they are covering in class.

The greatest thing I love about tutoring is the one-on-one time with the student. It allows me to focus on that particular student's needs, strengths, and method of learning. In short, I can meet the student where he/she is at on a direct level. This is something that is very difficult, and sometimes almost impossible, to accomplish in a class setting. Don't get me wrong! School is necessary, and classes have their place. However, not all students learn as easily in a large group setting. They need the extra time to really figure out and understand what is taught in class. Not all students learn the same way in which a subject is taught. Students are people. And people are unique. Therefore, people understand and comprehend in different ways. I am very much a one-on-one person myself! All of my years in school, including college, if I had a question, I would never raise my hand in class. I would ask the teacher/professor after class because I wanted the one-on-one directness. I wanted to make sure I understood what had been taught. I would even e-mail my professors directly or schedule a time where I could meet with them in person. Personal is a big deal to me!

So, you may be wondering what exactly would make me such an ideal English tutor for you. First of all, I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. I also have a second degree, which is an Associate of General Studies. I have had quite extensive experience in writing and editing, which has ultimately made me a grammar guru! As I mentioned before, I LOVE words! Words are so powerful, no matter how they are presented, whether in a book, on beautiful home decor, on a random piece of paper, or typed out on the web. Reading is a big hobby of mine! And having the opportunity to cultivate a love for reading in someone makes me smile!

I would love to have the opportunity to work with you and help you on your journey of learning, bettering yourself, and strengthening your skills! If you can read and write well, then you can definitely go places! Because those two abilities are the absolute KEY to your personal growth as a human being, student, employee, and lifelong learner. Look at it this way, without the ability to read or write, there is no purpose for any other subject. For math, you have to be able to read numbers, equations, formulas. For sciences, you have to be able to read and write answers to the questions in the textbook. Every subject has a textbook to learn from. So, if you can't read or write, then so many doors are closed to you. Learn to read and write well, and you will open many doors of opportunity!

Please contact me if you would like to know more or if you would like to schedule a lesson! I look forward to helping you all that I can!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
