About Cory

I graduated from Academy High School. I earned an Associate's Degree from Temple Junior College and a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, grades 4-8 from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

I hold a current teacher certification in 3 areas: English, Language Arts and Reading (grades 4-8); Generalist (grades 4-8); and Family and Consumer Sciences (grades 6-12).

I worked for Temple ISD for 15 years in various capacities.I worked as a Special Education Aide at Temple High School and a Library Assistant at Travis Middle School while completing my degree. I completed a teaching internship as a TAKS Reading Lab teacher (grades 6-8) at Lamar Middle School. I taught Kindergarten at Meredith-Dunbar Elementary. Over the course of 7 years, I taught Skills for Living (grades 6-8), Journalism/Yearbook (grades 7-8), Career Portals (grades 6-7), Principles of Hospitality and Tourism (grade 8), Principles of Human Services (grade 8), and Communication Application-Public Speaking (grade 8). I am currently a substitute teacher at Academy ISD.

Throughout the last 17 years, I have learned many things about teaching and kids. Most importantly, there needs to be a bond between teacher and student. There must be mutual respect and trust. The student must know that the teacher cares about the student and his/her success in all things. With this bond in place, the student is more willing to learn and achieve. I have also learned that the teacher must hold and maintain the highest expectations for each student. When a teacher believes in the abilities of the student and instills these beliefs into the student, the student will often meet or exceed the expectations of the teacher. Lastly, there is not a single student that learns exactly the same way as any other student. The teacher must adapt to the student's way of learning. As a tutor, I will get to know your student, maintain high expectations for your student, teach your student strategies to aid in his/her success and create lessons and activities specifically designed for the success of your student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Nutrition

In teaching Skills for Living and Principles of Hospitality and Tourism for several years, I have taught Nutrition units to middle school students. The units covered nutrients and their importance throughout the lifespan, daily portions and healthy foods, eating disorders and healthy lifestyles. I have created materials and activities to reinforce these topics.

Phonics

In college, I took a Diagnostics class in which phonics was a major aspect. Each class held a Reading Camp for struggling readers and we taught the students phonics and decoding strategies. I used the same strategies while teaching Reading in my kindergarten classroom. I have created materials and activities to aid in learning phonics.

Public Speaking

As an active 4-H member for 9 years, I participated in multiple public speaking workshops and competitions. I took a public speaking class at Temple Junior College in order to complete my. Associate's Degree. I was the middle school UIL Modern Oratory coach. While teaching at Lamar Middle School, I also taught Communication Applications as a high school credit class for 8th graders.

Study Skills

I have always incorporated a study skills unit into every class that I have taught. The unit focused on study strategies specific to that class, organizational strategies and time management strategies. I have created materials and detailed examples for use in my classes.
