My love of teaching began with having great teachers myself, who demonstrated that caring and patience would pay off in any learning situation. I have taught a variety of school-related and non-school related subjects to students of all ages, from swimming lessons for toddlers to voice for adults. An avid life-long student myself, I enjoy passing on what I have learned, and helping my students through patient problem-solving.
My life experiences bring a global perspective to my specialties. Business has taught me the vital importance of the ability to express one's self in a professional and grammatically correct manner. Travel has brought my level of understanding in Spanish beyond the textbook, to everyday life. History and Anthropology have been lifelong interests, which I share enthusiastically.
I am generally available in the summer months, and can accommodate most schedules.
Minoring in Anthropology at the University level, and using that education later in life as a business traveler, gave me a unique perspective on the importance of understanding the many cultures around the world, and how those different cultures impact our daily lives. This topic is vital today, as understanding others is a key to success in the global workplace.
Having learned Spanish in school, then applying it to the real world, I have the advantage of knowing both the origins of learning this important language, and how it is used outside the classroom. Seemingly repetitive or dull lessons can be brought to life using real experiences to enhance their relevance.
My many years in business have taught the crucial importance of proper use and understanding of English. From reading the simplest e-mail to producing management-quality reports and presentations, the use and understanding of our native language is often a key component in advancement. This is true in upper levels of education as well as in the selection and execution of successful careers.
As a major in World History, I have studied a wide variety of times, circumstances and events. My interests have included many areas and eras, and I can bring a depth to lessons that will help the student retain and recall through association with real people leading real lives.
My patient teaching style has proven effective in helping others discover new topics and ideas. I look forward to beginning the voyage with you! I am a vocal music professional, with more than 30 years experience in singing at that level. I am classically trained, having studied privately with James Shrader and Aija Jirgensons, both professional opera performers and music educators. I have operated a private music studio for voice students since the late 1980s, with particular emphasis on vocal techniques, including and particularly ear training, vital to the successful musician.
I studied voice privately for 10 years under James Shrader, voice faculty at Valdosta State Univ (retired) and Aija Jirgensons, professional Soprano. I sing professionally, and have since the early '80s under such distinguished directors as Robert Page, Dale Johnston (Minnesota Opera) and Hal France (Opera Omaha). I currently run my own voice studio and have a number of private students. My vocal pedagogy has been particularly effective with older teen and young adult beginners, and focuses on sustainable basic techniques in breath control, ear training and sound theory.
