I am a Texas certified 1st-6th teacher with over 20 years of experience. I have provided quality Reading, Writing, and Math instruction in a fun, nurturing environment for grades 3-5.
My love for reading and writing has helped instill confidence in those that I have taught over the years. Many of my students have either gone up a grade, or filled in skill gaps from the previous school years. I have used many of Stephanie Harvey's Toolkit reading strategies in my guided reading and tutoring lessons after school. I have also taught 4th grade writing skills for 9 years, and have tutored students at all levels in order to prepare them for the narrative and expository writing prompts on the STAAR writing tests. (I have also taught the new 5th grade Math TEKS this year.)
If you choose to meet with me, I provide a free consultation meeting. I try to be flexible with time, and offer a 24 hour cancellation policy. I also offer make-up classes.
I have found that meeting at the Lewisville Public library is a great place to tutor. There are rooms available that provide a quiet and comfortable study space. However, I am flexible with traveling to another location within a 10 mile radius of my home.

My family has recently relocated to the Highland Village area. Of course I was skeptical about hiring someone that I found online. Kelly has worked out perfectly. She is very patient and kind with my son. My son is very shy and has difficulty with reading and comprehension. Kelly is also prompt and very easygoing about schedule changes. She is always reachable too! I would highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor elementary (K-6) students since I have been teaching for 20 years, mostly in grades 3-5. I have student taught 1st grade, as well as substitute teaching in grades K-6th. Also, I have taught reading, writing, and math in after school, as well as summer school tutoring using a variety of differentiated teaching methods. I enjoy helping children to feel confident about their learning. I try to make it as fun and painless as possible for them. My experience comes from using Stephanie Harvey's guided reading toolkit lessons. I have found great success in using this approach in tutoring reading. Also, I have been to a Gretchen Bernabei writing conference, and have used her writing strategies in helping my students achieve success on the STAAR narrative/expository compositions.
I have previously taught math in grades 1-5. I have been trained and am up-to-date with current curriculum standards and TEKS. I have used manipulatives, as well as traditional approaches in teaching math concepts. Since each individual student learns math concepts differently, I assess how they learn best in order to help them become successful in learning new skills.
