About Caroline

I am an Earthling and alumni of the University of Houston and just proudly hung two Bachelors, one in English and one in Communication on my wall.

As someone who has done writing coaching for peers, I can write mountains of paragraphs on improvement. I have checked over essays, short stories, poems, and college application personal statements.

Even in English classes at the University of Houston, I was the class bookworm. I was a known feedback giver among fellow Creative Writers, whether it was skimming for grammar or the logistics of the narrative storytelling. I analyze classics from the pop cultural hit Harry Potter to the conventional classics like the Scarlet Letter.

Although my days of taking ACTs and SATs have long been past, that doesn't mean I don't have the deductive tricks (courtesy of Latin classes) to test sections involving reading comprehension (I applied these tricks to the pesky vocabulary section).

I was a history gal in my circle of friends in high school and was often approached to guide them through the history materials. I may be no Lin Manuel Miranda, but I can compose poetic trivia of history to memorable facts about history.

I possess a BA in filmmaking, have done audio engineering, loves to dissect every frame of a film, and have script consulted for Houston short films. And I know Final Cut 10 and Adobe Premiere.

I don't bite. But let me know if I intimidate you with my enthusiasm.

I am typically an online gal and enjoy utilizing the Wyzant platform to have examples on display, but I can meet with fellow Houstonians or League City folks in-person, preferably at the Harris County Freeman Library, the Murder By Chocolate coffee shop (18201 FM270 B, Houston, TX 77058), or the Starbucks at 2560 TX-96, League City, TX 77573. My schedule is quite flexible, open on afternoons and evenings and weekdays, Sundays included. Even if my schedule here does not indicate so, reach out to me and I'll make the time for you.

I am currently training to be a Brain Trainer at Learning RX.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have been prepped with techniques in reading comprehension, whether it's figuring the main idea of a passage and analyzing its context. Due to Latin studies, I have utilized the study of root words when teaching kids deductive tricks to weeding out the right answer choice in the vocabulary section.

American History

History is not about memorizing dates and timelines, it's about being intimate with the subject matter. I'm a firm applier of using specific examples to learning about the effects of the time period, such as discussing how a specific colonist family would be affected by the Redcoats occupation of their home. In addition, I can use rap lyrics, a la-Hamilton, to make a concept humorous and memorable.

English

With an English B.A., I have three years of writing workshop experience, proofreading and offering constructive criticism for short stories, academic papers, and personal statements on college applications. I also have been a 3-time participant at the Boldface Writing Conference. When it comes to general tutoring, my method is to utilize fun prompts to have the student unwind and become more confident with their writing. I can assist in MLA and APA formats.

Film

At the University of Houston, I have been a Media Production Assistant for three years, guiding students around studio functions and checking in-out camera equipment. I have taken Digital Cinematography and made a music video and a few short films and served as audio engineer and editor in various projects, including commercials and comedy sketches. My greatest strengths also are in analyzing a film, its lighting, its mood, and its script.

GRE

My specialties are in the verbal comprehension as I can guide students through interpreting the contexts of the passage and show deductive tricks of solving unknown vocabulary words. I am familiar with writing a succinct outline and thesis within the first five minutes of the timed essay sections and know the intricacies of the "Analyze Issue" and "Analyze Argument" sections. I can also throw in some math.

Literature

With three years of American and British literature studies at the University of Houston, I have a sharp eye for symbolism, motifs, figurative language, intertexuality, etc. I coach students into sprucing up their thesis for their literary analysis paper and weave their ideas and brainstorming into a coherent outline toward a conclusion. Even if presented with a project or paper regarding a piece of literature I never read, I can still use the student's notes to guide them through organizing the ideas they've acquired themselves.

Proofreading

In terms of essays and creative-writing fiction, as an editor with three years of University writing workshops, I can whip up quick critiques and list out common shortcomings that pop up on a rough draft. Depending on face-to-face session, I often like the students to read their paper aloud since that has been an effective trick of them catching their own errors. When scheduling a session with me, you're free to send in your paper and brainstorming notes ahead of time so I can be ready for face-to-face.

SAT Reading

The reading comprehension is my specialty due to being subjected to much reading in Clear Horizons Early College. Due to Latin studies, I have utilized the study of root words when teaching kids deductive tricks to weeding out the right answer choice in the vocabulary section. As someone who studied up to Algebra I in college, I can throw in math lessons.

Theatre

I have acted in few productions, including School House Rock, The Vagina Monologues, and Wozyeck. I know the basic fundamentals of theater coaching and improv exercise. In addition, I have studied play text like Shakespeare and Arthur Miller and composed my own plays in my spare time.

Video Production

I have handled various cameras, Sonys and DSLRs, as a Media Production Assistant for 3 years. I also have partaken in Adobe Premiere and Final Cut editing for various gigs including short films and wedding videos. I have created my own short films.

Vocabulary

Studies in Clear Horizons Early College taught me many exercises of memorizing vocabulary, whether it's putting them into a sentence or story. As a brain trainer intern at Learning RX, I know memory games that help cement vocabulary words into a child's consciousness. In addition, two years of Latin studies has help me develop deductive tricks and studies of contextual meaning, which has helped me in the SAT, ACT, and GRE vocabulary questions.

Writing

I completed three years of fiction creative writing workshop experience at the University of Houston and it has shaped me to whip up quick critiques for fiction and essay materials. I am the Editor of InStory Houston and Mosaics magazine and know the mechanics of writing quality stories and essays for publication. When it comes to general tutoring, my method is to utilize fun prompts to have the student unwind and become more confident with their writing. I can assist in MLA and APA formats.
