About Matthew

I have been teaching ESL/EFL for five years, both in the States and in Japan. I have also spent a year teaching freshman English composition at San Jacinto College and Alvin Community College. If you are having trouble mastering MLA or APA format, I can certainly help you get to where you need to be. I work best with intermediate-level students and up, but I am ready and willing to work with students with lower proficiency. I also have experience preparing students for the TOEFL and TOEIC and I can easily adapt to prepare students for other standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT and GRE.

Besides teaching English, I am a former IT professional and a freelance web designer. I can help you with basic computer operation, the MS Office Suite, the Adobe Creative Suite, HTML, CSS, and more. I have a strong command of the Japanese language and have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level N1. I have abundant resources to help teach and tutor Japanese. A history minor, I am more than up to the task of tutoring in history courses up to the college level.

Though the above are my areas of specialty, I can also assist in just about any other academic course if you would like me to serve as a comprehensive, one-stop shop. I am confident I can successfully tutor most academic courses up to the sophomore level in college. Enlist my services, take my teaching to heart and you will not be disappointed with the results.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Flash

Between my coursework at the Art Institute at Pittsburgh and the University of Advancing Technology, I am sufficiently proficient in Flash to tutor beginners at the very least.

Adobe Illustrator

I have worked with the Adobe Creative Suite extensively in my coursework at both the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and the University of Advancing Technology.

Adobe Photoshop

I have worked with the Adobe Creative Suite extensively in my coursework at both the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and the University of Advancing Technology.

American History

I hold a History minor from the University of Houston.

English

I have been teaching English over six years both here in the States and in Japan. I hold a master's in English Education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL/EFL for nearly five years both here in the States and in Japan on the high school, university, and professional levels.

General Computer

Not only have I been a proficient computer operator since age six, but I also have passed the US Army Signal Corps' Information Systems Operator-Analyst course.

HTML

I hold a diploma in web design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and have been administering web sites for over six years now.

Japanese

I have lived and worked in Japan for two and a half years and have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level N1. Some of my Japanese friends have joked that I know more Japanese than some Japanese people. This is, of course, an exaggeration, but I am quite familiar with the ins and outs of the language.

Microsoft Windows

Besides being a proficient user of Windows-based systems for over 20 years, I was also qualified as an Information Systems Operator-Analyst in the US Army Signal Corps. I can certainly handle showing people the ins and outs of the OS.

Proofreading

Besides my experience as an English teacher, I have also worked as a freelance copyeditor for amateur novelists and worked as a documentation specialist for a consultation firm in the past.

TOEFL

I spent two years teaching ESL at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and the TOEFL was one of the primary focus areas of the curriculum.

Web Design

I possess a diploma in web design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and have been administering a website for over six years.

Writing

I hold a BA in creative writing from the University of Houston, which has one of the top writing programs in the country.
