I have worked with children on the autism spectrum, as well as other special needs, for over 8 years. I specialize in basic academics and behavior therapy for maladaptive behaviors. I have experience running an ABA classroom as well as using assessment tools such as the ABLLS, Brigance, Creative Curriculum, The Carolina, The AFLS, and VB-MAPP to create goals targeting basic skills. My experience spans the home, community, and school environments with parents, students, extended family, and educators.
I am a strong person with strong organizational and creative skills. With experience working with over 60 different families and children I feel that I have gained enough knowledge to be helpful in almost any situation. It is my passion to help others and I am even more passionate about helping children. In doing so, I am flexible with my teaching methods as I am aware that not all children learn and succeed in the same manner. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My specialty is working with children who are on the autism spectrum. Although this covers many disorders as autism is a spectrum disorder, I am extremely qualified in dealing with behaviors such as aggression and self-stimulatory behaviors, as well as accommodating a number of teaching methods. I am experienced in using curriculums and assessment tools such as the ABLLS, to target a child's needs.
For over eight years, I have worked with children of elementary school ages. These ages range from 3-16 but focus on ages 5-10. I have been a one-on-one tutor/therapist as well as a consultant who trained tutors in the home and school environments. I also have lead a ABA classroom with up to 10 students. Although I have taught a number of different skills, my focus is on basic learning skills in all areas such as math, speech, spelling, and reading.
It is typical to experience a child with more than one disorder. In doing so I have experienced a number of impairments, which include children who are hard of hearing or deaf. I am knowledgeable in sign language and PECS as well as using devices such as the Ipad for communicative purposes. It is of the utmost importance to establish a functional mode of communication for each individual as this will help decrease maladaptive behaviors. In doing so, I practice sign language, PECS, and the use of programs such as Proloquo on a daily basis.
Althougth my schooling and education have helped me to understand a number of disabilities, I feel that my work and personal background have given me knowledge that cannot be found in a classroom. I have over eight years experience working with children who have special needs. These include but are not limited to ADD/ADHD, Rett, emotionally disturbed, down syndrome, autism, and Asperger's. I have learned to adapt my teaching technique based on each child's disability or learning method.
