I enjoy encouraging students and inspiring a love for learning! My academic and professional experience allows me to tutor across many liberal arts subjects. I have a B.S. in Studio Arts from Biola University where I also graduated from the Torrey Honors Institute - a Great Books program (2012). Following this, I completed a master's degree in Humanities with a concentration in literature at the University of Dallas (2018). I currently teach fine arts and social studies courses for an online school. Competitive speech and debate throughout high school and college, as well as five years of experience as a coach, prepares me to tutor others in various forms of public speaking. Whether a student wants to improve critical thinking, communication, writing, reading comprehension skills, or something with more of an arts focus, I am glad to assist and have over a decade of experience in tutoring, classroom teaching, and coaching for a variety of subjects and age-groups. Working one-on-one is one of the most rewarding and worthwhile pursuits because it offers an opportunity to invest in uniquely gifted individuals in a manner best suited to each student. While teaching, I engage students in Socratic-style discussion in order to promote individual learning and critical thinking. I am able to tutor observational drawing, sketching, oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting, assemblage sculpture, machine sewing, art history, Western civ., ancient history classics, British lit, world history, public speaking, and various styles of debate. I also have an extensive background in Classical ballet and performing arts. If interested or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks! - Amy

Art

Art History,

Art History

I find art history very interesting and enjoyed the 4 undergraduate courses that covered ancient - contemporary art periods ( West. Art History I & II, Modernity, Contemporary Art Trends) in addition to Art and the Bible. I enjoy Art History particularly as it relates to the development of cultural practices and ideology. I have taught high school fine arts for an online school since 2016 and often bring art history into assignments, and have taught art history/ art appreciation in the past. One thing I love about introducing students to art history is the opportunity for them to recognize the similarities that they share with people from the past. I also enjoy helping students how to make close observations and learn to "visually read" artworks.
Art Theory,

Art Theory

I find art history very interesting and enjoyed the 4 undergraduate courses that covered ancient - contemporary art periods. Painting

Painting

My undergraduate degree is in studio arts and I have taught high school acrylic and watercolor painting for an online school since 2016. I have experience in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor mediums. I enjoy working in all mediums and have a working knowledge of color theory and composition. Painting is a wonderful form of art that can be as realistic or as expressive as an individual wants it to be and I enjoy guiding others along that journey and providing new challenges.

Amy is super kind and professional

I learned with Amy how to feel more confidence at having casual conversations. She shared practical examples that helped me to have a better preparation for casual meetings. She is super kind, smart and super clear to teach you. She also answered super quickly my request to have our session, which I really appreciate. Amy helped me to feel more confidence in my coffee chat. I will keep working with her to improve my speaking.

very responsible and knowledgeable tutor

Miss Amy has been our kids as 2nd grade reading grammar tutor for three weeks. She is very professional for what she teaches and she is a good controller for kids. She always has her way to make kids follow her way which I really love. Let kids sit tight in front of the iPad and listen to teacher is hard but if it’s Miss Amy then I won’t worry!

Knowledgable, articulate, patient - the perfect tutor for my girls!

We've had our first few lessons with Amy and she is just incredible! I could not have asked for a better tutor for my two girls who are 8 and 12. My younger daughter is receiving art lessons from Amy. She is normally very reserved and reluctant to engage with adults outside of the family, but she immediately felt comfortable with Amy from the get-go and requested to see Amy on a regular basis. Amy's approaches with kindness and respect and at the same time, very effective. My younger daughter is so proud of her drawings and that is priceless to me as a parent! I was also looking for a tutor to help my 7th grader improve her vocabulary. Amy has found a way to incorporate my daughter's love of reading as a springboard to not only improve vocabulary, but also analyze literature, practice her communication skills, and get her out of her shell! I'm positive that seeing Amy regularly will help build my daughter's confidence! We are so fortunate to have found Amy! Thank you Amy and Wyzant for making this possible.

very patient

She gave me a class on how to have a debate and gave very informative advice and gave me a clear understanding on how to make an argument.

Wonderful Debate Tutor!

Amy tutored my daughter in debate and I could not have been happier with her as a tutor. My daughter had no experience in debate and Amy was very patient and supportive of her. She offered creative ways for my daughter to practice and helped build her confidence. I would definitely recommend Amy as a tutor and will hire her again in the future!

Very organized and focused

Amy immediately had chemistry with both of our kids (9th and 6th graders). Amy is working as the general tutor for both of our homeschooled children. She is very organized, experienced and trustworthy.

Patient, Artistic, Flexible

We wanted someone who knows Art, and she does. She is very patient and very flexible. We wanted some classes during the summer break. My daughter has learned a lot. If you want someone who works with you and make you a better artist Amy will help you be that person. You can learn as much or as little as you want. She learned charcoal, drawing and painting. Thanks Amy!!
