About Jillian

My name is Jillian. I studied Korean for a year and a half every day for 8 hours a day through the Defense Language Institute. After that, I worked for the Army in Korea for a year. I have an Associate's Degree in Korean presented by the Congress of the United States and have a Bachelor's degree in Applied Linguistics. I love teaching other languages or teaching English as a second language! I am currently a paraprofessional at a Bilingual Elementary School, where I work in small groups and one-on-one with students, teaching primarily reading, but also some basic math. I also put a lot of effort into not being condescending and truly just care about the student learning the material. I hope to become a Linguistics Professor one day, but until that day comes, I would love to share my knowledge one-on-one!

I have received several awards for my proficiency. In 2009 I received Academic Excellence in Foreign Language for having the highest grade in Spanish in my entire school. In 2012 I received two awards, one for completing an immersion program in Seoul and the other for my excellence in that program. I was one of only two students from my class chosen to go to that program because I had one of the highest GPAs in my class. In 2013 I took the Defense Language Proficiency Test and received a 2 in Listening and a 3 in Reading for Korean. A 2 is typically the level of a high school graduate and a 3 is the level of a college graduate. (Most English speakers speak at a 3.) Finally, in 2014 I received an Army Achievement Medal for "Meritorious Service" while completing my mission as Cryptologic Linguist in Korea.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a degree in linguistics, which delves even deeper into the structure of languages, particularly English. I was an English major in college for 2 years before joining the Army. I also know a lot about English grammar as I use it as a comparison for learning other languages.

ESL/ESOL

I have a degree in Linguistics, which has a large focus on Second Language Acquisition. In addition, I was taught Korean by highly trained teachers and therefore will be able to apply those teaching methods to learners of English. Also, I currently work at a Bilingual (Spanish-English) Elementary school.

Grammar

I was an English major in college for 2 years before joining the Army. I also know a lot about English grammar as I use it as a comparison for learning other languages. In addition, I have a degree in linguistics, which delves even deeper into the structure of languages, particularly English.

Korean

I have an Associate's Degree in Korean given by Congress via the Defense Language Institute. I lived in Korea for one year and I am required to maintain my language for my job. I received a 2/3/2 on my DLPT.

Literature

I was an English major in college for 2 years where I took such classes as Irish Literature, British Literature, World Literature and Italian Renaissance Literature. In addition, I studied abroad in Florence, Italy for 3 months where I studied poetry and art.

Proofreading

I have proofread so many essays I cannot even begin to count. As a lover of the English language I am easily able to tell when sentences do not form well or when paragraphs are extraneous.

Reading

I have always had a high reading level ever since I was young. Reading is a great joy of life and being unable to do it properly should not be something that restricts anybody from discovering that joy. I am also able to read in Korean if that is something that piques your interest.

SAT Reading

The key to SAT reading is speed and vocabulary. Also, it is about being able to tell what is important. I have taken a similar test, the DLPT which consists solely on listening and reading sections, and have been able to ace it due to my ability to understand the questions and formulate proper answers based on what is given.

SAT Writing

Though everyone's writing styles are different, for the SATs they are looking for a few key points. The SATs typically look for concise responses that show off one's ability to properly use the English language. I can help guide the student's writing style to fit well with the standards given.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary, in my opinion, is the most important part of a language. It changes a sentence from boring to je ne se quoi. I can guarantee to build your vocabulary by looking at things like the word's etymology, creating interesting mnemonic devices or by simple rote memorization.

Writing

Writing is the most useful invention ever created by humans. Without it, our cultures would not be able to expand as far, nor would we have been able to have created things like cars or the internet. Unfortunately, due in part to the latter, many people have gotten lazy with this wonderful creation and have decided to "rite laik dis 4eva." Which is truly sad. I wish to help the written English Language return to its eternal glory.

Good Chemistry

I saw that Jillian had a good chemistry (her tone, demeanor and verbiage) with my daughter, which is what I wanted to see in the initial tutoring session because that was going to determine whether I requested for her services in the future. I have requested her for an hour session twice a week and I look forward to my daughter learning from Jillian.
