Hi, my name is Bryan. I started my higher education in 1986. In 1988, I earned an associates of arts degree from Texas State Technical Institute, Waco. I spent more than ten years in the art business doing graphic design and sign work. I enjoyed the art business, but I would often think about some experiences I had while in art school. I had one professor who would often ask me to spend time with certain students to help them better understand how to complete the technical art projects. The first time he asked me, he saw I was confused. He told me he felt I could connect one on one and give the student a better focus. He was right. The students I worked with "got it". So years later I decided to become a teacher.
In 1997, I received my bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. My degree consisted of a dual major in reading and language arts. I taught public school for some time. However, I had an opportunity to teach English as a Second Language at the college level. I joined the ESL staff at Central Texas College in January of 2000.
I found teaching ESL to be very rewarding. I soon found my work to be more than just a teaching experience. ESL students come from basically three age groups. Many are very young. They have just graduated from public school in their native countries. Others are military spouses around age thirty that want to improve their English for the job market. The last main group are in their fifties and sixties. They are spouses of retired military. They just "want to learn". I have enjoyed all these age groups.
This mixture of age groups, and the fact that students would often have the same teachers for several semesters made ESL a "family" experience. This situation allowed me to develop long term educational relationships with my students. Students would often bring questions to me outside of classroom time. It was more comfortable for them. Soon we were setting aside time for more "formal" tutoring. So I began working one-on-one with my students who asked. In the classroom I mainly taught reading and grammar. Most of these one-on-one sessions were for student problems in grammar. Active/Passive voice was a common topic. In tutoring reading I helped with finding the main idea (stated or implied). We would also work with prefixes, roots, and suffixes to strengthen vocabulary.
As for my approach to tutoring, it is based on listening carefully to the student's questions and having an idea of what the student's learning style is. Does the student respond to visual aids? Or, does he or she respond to explanation, and then use the information to complete a "hands on" worksheet? The most important thing is to connect with a student's specific needs.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
