About Leslie

Hello and Welcome!

I am a graduate student at UNT working on my PhD in English with a concentration in literature. I enjoy tutoring students and helping them one-on-one and in small groups. I have a daughter with ADHD, dyslexia, and other special learning needs, so I understand what it is like for your child to struggle with focus and attention in school and miss out on valuable instruction time.

I can help with reading, writing, literature, grammar, and vocabulary. I can create a custom curriculum for the summer and/or help your child throughout the school year.

I am also a member of the GSEA - Graduate Students in English Association and Sigma Tau Delta - The International English Honor Society.

Thank you for taking the time to view my profile. Have a nice day.

All the best,,
Leslie G.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

My daughter has ADHD and dyslexia, so I understand the extra attention and individualized lesson plans that your child needs. I have experience working with students with ADHD, dyslexia, and Asperger Syndrome. I can help your student develop techniques and build confidence to better manage his or her ADHD.

ASVAB

I can help you improve your performance in the verbal sections of the ASVAB test.

English

As a graduate literature student, I must have a strong understanding of English. I can help your student improve English skills.

ESL/ESOL

I can help your second language student better understand how to speak, read and write in English.

Grammar

I have several years of experience grading and correcting college-level papers, focusing specifically on grammar and syntax. As a graduate student in English, I must write long papers each semester and my professors expect excellent grammar.

Literature

My primary focus in my doctoral program is Modern American Drama, but I have extensive experience in Modern American Literature in general. I would love to help your student expand his or her understanding of literature and the rhetorical techniques and strategies used to create great texts.

Phonics

As a graduate student studying literature, I have studied linguistics and phonetics and have a thorough understanding of both. I also have a daughter in 2nd grade who struggles with reading. After working with her over the past few months, her phonetic awareness has improved and she now reads at grade level.

Reading

As a literature student, I read every day and am able to help a student of any grade level with reading analysis and comprehension.

Special Needs

My daughter has ADHD and dyslexia, so I understand the extra attention and individualized lesson plans that your child requires. I have experience teaching students with a wide range of special learning needs (ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and Asperger Syndrome (now on the Autism Spectrum)) and can help your student develop some techniques and build the confidence he or she needs to effectively manage special learning needs.

Writing

I am an experienced writer and am able to break the writing process down so it will make your student more comfortable when faced with writing assignments. I have experience working with students who experience a variety of learning disabilities and who have difficulty responding to prompts. Because writing is a process, the more time we have to work on and revise an assignment, the better the writing will be when your student submits it.

Great Writing Tutor

I was looking for a writing tutor for my 12 year old son who's been struggling with the subject. Leslie arrived right on time for the appointment. She came well prepared, with numerous handouts, activities and teaching aids. My son is usually quiet and reserved, but she was able to get him to open up and relax, and write! She made the hour fly by. I immediately booked her for the rest of June. I c
