I truly love teaching art!
My name is Malone and I am an art instructor with over twenty-five years of experience teaching diverse forms of visual arts techniques, methods, and subjects.
I relocated to Fort Worth, Texas from the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area where for many years I served as a certified art teacher. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting, with the Honor of Distinction, from the American University in Washington, D.C. where I attended on a full scholarship. I also earned my Graduate diploma from the world famous Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, Inc. which is located in Dover, New Jersey. And, I am very proud to have received international recognition when I was given the 2001 Outstanding Graduate Award from the Art Instruction Schools in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While much of my personal artwork is traditionally realistic and representational, I appreciate and am fluent in all styles and schools of artistic expression.
Until my relocation to Texas, I taught for a number of years as an art instructor at the prestigious Art League School of Alexandria (VA) and at the renowned VisArts of Rockville, Maryland. At both schools, I taught Drawing, Painting, Figure Drawing and Anatomy, Sculpture, and Cartooning. I have taught art in a number of community centers and have volunteered at assisted living facilities. Over the years, I have also been commissioned to teach privately.
In addition to being an art instructor, I am a full-time self-employed professional illustrator and fine artist. As an illustrator, I create covers and interior art for books, graphic design, and I have created cartoon artwork for companies such as Marvel and DC Comics. My work has received numerous awards including one from the Society of Illustrators in New York. As a fine artist, I am a commissioned portrait painter and I also create personal artwork for gallery representation which consists of a wide range of subject matter.
Shortly after my arrival in Texas, I accepted a position as an adjunct art professor with the Tarrant County College District where I proudly taught Drawing and Painting courses from Spring semester 2010 until Spring semester 2013. While there, my students consistently received top honors and awards in every one of the yearly Tarrant County College N.W. Campus Student Art Exhibitions.
Also, I have assisted a number of my students with the development of their art portfolios which has not only helped them to be admitted into one of the art schools of their choice, but has enabled many of them to receive scholarships, as well.
I am very proud that I have a record of proven and successful approaches to teaching art which not only provide my students with the means to become technically proficient and personally self expressive, but which also allow my students to enjoy the learning process. However, my ultimate goal as an instructor is to guide my students with the development of their artistic decision making that will eventually enable them to become their own teachers.
I have been a tutor with WyzAnt for some time now and this has been a wonderful learning experience for my students and truly one of the most rewarding experiences of my life!
I will be very happy to first share with you in person examples of my artwork, examples of artwork created by my students, as well as to explain my specific teaching approaches. Most importantly, I will discuss how I can enable you to accomplish your artistic pursuits.
And, that first meeting with a prospective student is always free of any charge or further obligation.
Art is my passion, and I would love to share that passion with you!
Thank you for reading this.

For the past few weeks now, Mr. Malone has been giving me lessons in anatomy, value, rendering, perspective, and he has also been helping me build my portfolio for entry into an art school. I am extremely impressed by his body of work and experience, and I can hardly find the words to express how grateful I am to have the chance to work with an artist such as himself. It's been a truly invigorating experience, and has helped rekindle my passion for drawing, painting, and art in general. For the line of work I'm interested in going into (animation/game art), he's the perfect fit for my needs as a growing artist. For anyone interested in finding a teacher who will sit down with you one-on-one, and very patiently explain everything from the basics to refined technique and practice, and also if you just want a highly experienced mind to pick for advice, I strongly recommend Mr. Malone S. You will not regret it.
I have had two lessons with Mr. Malone, and I have been very impressed with both his work and his teaching style. He makes sure things are clear for you. I have learned more in two lessons than I thought I would. I'm confident that my skills will get much better as I work with him. I definitely recommend him.
This was my daughter's first art lesson with Mr. S. She has no art background and is truly starting from scratch. Mr. S. has a great attitude about beginners. For a man who has taught this material thousands of times, he worked with my daughter with freshness and enthusiasm. My daughter really liked the pace, format and encouragement. She has practiced what she learned each day since the lesson and I can already see some confidence forming.
He provides very good instruction, and makes sure to fill each session with profound artistic knowledge. For the first few lessons he informs you of what you will need for the next coming sessions, and you are taught the basic foundations of drawing. He teaches the six principles of design, and you are given some sort of assignment to do on your own by the next session. You will immediately notice an enhancement in your artistic skill after your first few lessons.
Thank you so much for that wonderful testimonial. Those words mean so much coming from you. You are a truly gifted young lady, both artistically and intellectually, in every sense.
And, it is my extreme pleasure to work with you. Thank you for that privilege!
Mr. Malone has been teaching my daughter about 2 years, and she enjoys every single class. Unfortunately, she is getting busier with her school work and she has to give up the class now.
Mr. Malone is really very professional with great patience, he is one of the most wonderful tutors we have met!
It has been my extreme pleasure to have instructed art concepts and techniques to Catherine for the past two years, as well as to have watched her grow as an excellent, budding artist and, more importantly, as a truly wonderful person. And, I hope that I have helped her toward accomplishing her future goals. I will always cherish and appreciate the opportunity to have worked with Catherine!
My wife and I had our first drawing lesson from Malone today. Although my wife has some experience with drawing and painting, I am a novice. Malone is starting us at the beginning and teaching basic concepts upon which we can develop our own interests. My wife is wanting to paint in oil
and I am interested in pen and ink sketching and watercolors. Malone clearly has an extensive background in multiple areas of drawing, sketching,
painting and the basics of Renaissance art and its artists. We both enjoyed his bringing into the lesson the methods used in past and how the most
famous early artists developed their skills. We are both eagerly anticipating our next lesson!
My first lesson with Mr. S was incredibly detailed and informative. He taught me methods that were both detailed and practical. Not only did he teach me these methods, he also made sure to break them down so a novice like myself would be able to understand these techniques. Mr. S went into great detail about the basics of drawing, such as how to draw lines, 2D shapes, and 3D shapes. He even taught me the proper way to hold the drawing utensil. In conclusion, I am very satisfied with Mr. S and his tutoring, and I am especially pleased with the fact that he will continue to teach me in the coming weeks. Thanks Mr. S!
I've only had two lessons thus far, but Mr. S has already opened my eyes to things that I'd never considered artistically. He has listened to my needs and adjusted my classes accordingly. He's respectful and understanding of my time restraints while still giving me the maximum training based on my schedule. Thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH for your wonderful review!! You are an extremely talented artist and I feel very privileged to work with you. I truly look forward to our next class!
We had our first lesson with Mr. Malone last Friday and I can't say enough how lucky I feel to find such a wonderful Art teacher for my 13 yrs. old son. I've never seen anyone so professional, patient and dedicated to his job and students before. My son was amazed by knowledge, respect and quality of teaching provided by Mr. Malone. We are definitely going to continue taking our Art lessons and Mr. Malone is highly recommended as a rare treasure in our area for everyone who is interested in Art and quality education.
Thank you again, Mr. Malone!
Mr. S. has a fantastic method of laying a solid foundational approach to drawing. I have taken classes over the years and read several books but his approach has been more helpful in a single session than all the other information combined from my past. He was able to simply break down the basic concepts of drawing in a way that I could easily apply it and understand it. Highly recommended!
Why a fabulous artist like Malone S. is giving lessons is a mystery to me, however, I can only be grateful he does. I knew I wanted him as a teacher as soon as I saw his work, which is a reflection of the way I wish I could paint. He has an expert's thorough knowledge of his subject and is delighted to share this knowledge with the student. His manner is pleasant, low-key and patient, yet the lesson was fascinating, peppered with stories of how the masters and his fellow artists handled particular subjects. The DFW area is lucky to have this one!
Malone is very experienced and he really seems to know what he's talking about. He moves quickly but covers everything thoroughly. He has a very methodical approach. My son really likes the way he breaks things down and makes complicated concepts very easy to understand. He is looking forward to his next lessons and excited about what he's learning. Malone brings a wealth of knowledge with everything he presents and is not only an excellent teacher of art but an overall brilliant man with a pleasant demeanor.
Malone was great today, I had painted a pear for my homework assignment and thought it was pretty good. He then painted a pear in 20 minutes that looked so beautiful and real that you just wanted to pick it up and eat it, it was that good! I showed it to my wife and she couldn't believe how awesome it was! If someone wants to learn drawing and painting, Malone is the best around!
7/18/2012 - I had my 3rd working lesson with Malone, yesterday, and this was the best yet! I had homework to complete - I made three sketches and Malone worked with me on all three of them, giving me excellent and well thought out feedback. He has a way with both verbal and drawing communication which I find refreshing. He is very encouraging and positive in his feedback. What I liked was that he redrew my sketch in his style and method immediately under mine, which I think is an excellent approach! We talked for almost the entire lesson on that one sketch! But he still took time to work on the other two sketches as well as reintroducing the concept of shadows using a lamp and ball.
For about 2 years, I was unable to draw - and I don't know why. But after a few weeks, Malone has helped me get excited again about my art. I look forward to our next lesson! I would recommend Malone to any who has an interest in learning art, or who wants to improve their skills. His holistic approach is excellent!
7/2/2012 - My first session with Malone was last week, when he and I sat and talked for 2 hours. He wanted to get to know me and discuss his teaching philosophy, my goals and objectives, interests and background. I felt that this was a great way to start and I appreciated this comfortable approach. He put me at ease with his personality and demeanor.
Yesterday was our first working session and I was very comfortable with his teaching style and enthusiasm! We covered a lot of material - he had handouts, and clearly demonstrated everything. He referred to the old masters and their styles throughout the lesson, which helped bring the concepts together and piqued my interest in art history. He was slow and methodical as we covered the basics, but the lesson moved at a good pace. There was a good deal of interaction which I was comfortable with. I think we can all remember classes where the teacher stood and lectured for the whole period - Malone is not like that. We discussed the concepts of line, shapes, movement, etc.
All in all this was the most enjoyable and educational art class I have ever taken. I look forward future classes. He has put a charge in me that had been lacking for years. I would recommend Malone to anyone who wants to be a better artist.
Malone S. is very talented and has a wide range of artistic assets. He has been very patient and informative. I felt like he has taken his time and has answered every question in length. I'm looking forward to my personal growth in art with his instruction.
Mr. Malone is a fantastic teacher and has a great knowledge of art. He can effectively communicate concepts very easily. He is very graceful as he teaches and I was mesmerized by everything he was doing on paper and by everything he had me doing. I was excited and laughed at the pure enjoyment as he guided me as I drew. I never felt such a rush with pencil and paper! Everything he teaches, makes you feel better and confident about your artistic skills. He is such a nice man and he shows that he really cares about the student. I look forward to gaining more knowledge from him.
I am going on 55 years old and owned my own business since I was 19, so it's been awhile since I have been in school. Malone is a great tutor and artist. I look forward to my lesson every week. If anybody needs a tutor in art you could look the world over and not find a better teacher. I feel very lucky to have such a great man teaching me. I look forward to many more lessons. I highly recommend Malone, he is very patient and is always on time and he gives you more than you pay for. I can't say enough about the joy this brings me to learn again from a true master of his craft.
Malone is an incredible artist and an amazing teacher! He is teaching my 14 year old cartooning and how to draw super heroes. He very knowledgeable and has lots of experience in his field. He is very patient and takes time to explain each step, instead of just having the student copy a picture like most art teachers we've had in the past. He is always on time, and is very courteous and trustworthy. I highly recommend Malone as an art tutor!
I have a 9 year-old son loves to draw. It is hard to find a great art tutor around Fort Worth/Arlington area. Believe me, I have tried for couple years. Mr Malone is talented and an experienced teacher. He conveys art terms to understandable level to a 9 year old. He approaches his teaching in a systemic fashion. sometime a great artist may not be a great teacher. I believed Mr Malone process both. I highly recommend him to anyone who interested in learning visual art (Adult or child).
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I believe that a knowledge of Art History is extremely important to better understand mankind and the diverse cultures of our world.
I have been a lifelong student of Art History and I co-majored in Art History while working toward my Master of Fine Arts degree.
I am extremely knowledgeable of all Art Historical time periods and artistic genres, as well as of the artists who contributed to them.
As a public high school Art Teacher, I very successfully taught Basic and Advanced Placement Art History. And, I also had the wonderful opportunity to teach High School Art History in the prestigious International Baccalaureate program.
I always strive to not only give my students an understanding of the development of Art from Prehistory through today, but to impart a working knowledge of the relevant styles and techniques used to create art. In order to accomplish this, I often supplement my lectured information with related, fun hands-on art activities which enable my students to better comprehend the concepts and methodology which artists have used to express themselves throughout the ages. I discuss the theories of Aesthetics: how and why different cultures have formed and expressed their own standards of beauty.
Additionally, and very importantly, I teach approaches to Critiquing Artwork so that my students can make and present informed opinions regarding works of art, regardless of style or technique.
My goal is for all of my Art History students to be able to intelligently and to eloquently discuss Art History whether it is for a research writing assignment, a verbal classroom presentation, to prepare for an exam, a museum visit, in a gallery setting, during friendly discourse, or simply for personal edification.
For many years, I have had great success with introducing the concepts of formal Art Theory to my students which enables them to clearly and aesthetically express their own individual artistic statements.
I emphasize to them that the use of the Elements of Art in conjunction with the Principles of Design is the means to making their artistic statements regardless of the style, content, genre, or subject matter of their particular works.
Additionally, I share with my students approaches to Art Criticism Operations which not only allow them to use their aesthetic awareness to make informed opinions about art created by other artists but which also serves as a means of evaluating their own efforts during, as well as after the resolution of their artwork.
I pride myself in teaching time honored, traditional Drawing concepts in a contemporary manner. I use approaches to drawing which enable my students to express themselves through the use of Line, Shape, Value, Size, Direction, Texture, and even Color!
I personally work in diverse technical modes and genres of self expression. And, I have had the wonderful opportunity to study with and be mentored by renowned drawing instructors and artists such as Glenn Vilppu, Burne Hogarth, Gene Colan, and Joseph Sheppard.
I was an honor graduate of the renowned Kubert School, and I have been a professional practitioner and teacher of cartoon art for more than twenty years.
I will always truly enjoy sharing with others all of the many disciplines which I have learned.
But my ultimate goal as a teacher is to help my students to eventually become their own teacher.
Regardless of style or subject matter, I know that the principles and techniques of Painting can be taught and can be learned by anyone who is willing to patiently persevere while practicing traditionally time honored procedures, methodology, and approaches. Learning in this manner will serve as the springboard for anyone's chosen means of personal self expression.
And, I have always been amazed at how effectively these principles and techniques produce their intended aesthetic results when applied with diligence, knowledge, and understanding.
My paintings have garnered prestigious awards, have been shown in many galleries, and have been featured on the covers of numerous books. They are created using the very concepts, principles, and techniques which I teach. While much of my work tends to be traditionally realistic, my intention is to help each of my students find and express his or her own individual artistic voice.
I have had the wonderful experience to study with and to be mentored by renowned artists, among them the master oil painter and pastelist Daniel E. Greene, as well as Boris Vallejo and his wife Julie Bell, both of whom are acknowledged as two of the world's top Fantasy Illustrators.
