About Paul

I have loved teaching since my days as a graduate student back in 1973-77. Subsequently, while teaching freshman chemistry at the University of Illinois, I especially enjoyed office hours, where I was able to help individuals or small groups, addressing their specific needs. I specialize in using analogies, which help students visualize difficult concepts. Feedback from students is crucial, because it improves my effectiveness.

Even while working in industry, I looked for teaching opportunities, serving as a Traveling Lecturer for the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, as the lead instructor for courses on oil refining, and now in my present job as founder of PRRVIEW Knowledge Ehancement.

I hold a PhD in Chemistry from the University of California - San Diego (1977). My career includes jobs with the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana (2 years teaching freshman chemistry), Oak Rdige National Lab (3 years conducting research in physical chemistry), Unocal (14 years in research, process design, and process licensing), 6 years at AspenTech (control and optimization), and twelve years in catalyst technical service with major oil companies.

My communications skills are excellent. I have published 80 papers, edited two reference books, and given technical presentations in 33 countries. With Toastmasters International, I won several awards, receiving a CTM certificate and winning the Southern California regional humorous speech competition in1984.

For presentations and writing, I have become an expert in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Visio. In my editing work, I have had to correct the English of many authors from China, Japan, and other countries where English is a distant second language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have presented technical papers at more than 40 conferences. I've also won numerous awards in contests sponsored by Toastmasters International; in 1989, I won the Humorous Speech contest during the Southern California Regional contest. I also won the 1989 Toastmaster of the Year in my local chapter in Brea, California.
