About Bradley

I am currently tutoring professionally at the JEI Educational Learning Center in the Katy area. I am retired from a public High School in the Houston area and I have also been tutoring students on a weekly basis for several years in various subjects. Reading, writing, SAT/ACT, Taks, prep, STAAR prep, and English literature are typically the subjects that I tutor most of the time. I was also the UIL Spelling and Vocabulary coach at our school, and our UIL Spelling team that I directed won first place several years in a row. This UIL Spelling team was the first team in the history of the school to ever advance to the UIL State contest in Austin.

My educational background and love of education is reflected in the thirty plus years of experience that I have as a state certified public school teacher. I am willing to travel and go the extra distance for all of my students. I feel extremely successful working one-on-one with students, and I have extensive experience with various Sylvan learning center strategies as well as Huntington learning based strategies because I have worked in both of these types of centers in the past. Currently I work at JEI learning center and tutor elementary and secondary students.

Over the past twenty years, I have tutored ACT and SAT reading, PSAT reading and writing, vocabulary, persuasive and expository writing, math, and grammar in various settings.

I have taught English I, II, III, IV, as well as GED, PSAT, STAAR and TAKS prep classes.

I have also tutored basic elementary mathematics for elementary aged students at various learning centers.

My love of children and my desire to see them succeed is one of the main reasons why I love to tutor students.

My UIL Spelling record and my desire as a High School Spelling, vocabulary, and proofreading coach to drive kids to success has been extremely intrinsically rewarding and satisfying.

I have coached high school tennis, and my son was ranked as one of the top ten players in Texas during his high school career.

I would strongly urge you to contact me to learn more and schedule some lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I passed the test that Wyzant gave me for ACT writing and I have had previous experience tutoring ACT in both private tutoring sessions and group sessions. I have thirty years of teaching experience. In addition, I have tutored several students on the ACT, SAT, and PSAT in the past number of years before Wyzant gave me their test online.

ACT Reading

I have taught ACT Reading and writing in all of my classes and currently I am teaching a College Prep class that involves writing and reading. My background certification in Language Arts and English qualifies me along with my practical teaching experience when it comes to ACT and SAT and PSAT.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am state certified K-12 to teach English and Speech. I have thirty years of public school instruction in the Houston area. I have tutored k-6 students at renowned learning centers and have the know how and education to get the job done.

Elementary Math

I have passed the elementary math test and I have tutored elementary math for several years with a great deal of success. Many of my elementary math students have gone on to bigger and more complicated math problems. Teaching math to elementary students is extremely rewarding and satisfying. I will always enjoy teaching elementary math.

English

I have instructed English I, English II, English III, English IV, and College Prep level classes in my twenty five years of public school teaching. Currently I have several classes during the day, and I tutor during the evenings and on weekends.

ESL/ESOL

I have previously tutored ESL at my High School, working with ESL and ESOL students in many of my classes. Experience is the best teacher, and having them work in groups discussing problems and getting a chance to use the English language is definitely a big goal and great opportunity. As much as possible, I always have them working in groups so that they can share with each other and work to polish language skills that they so desperately need.

GED

My graduate work is also in the field of Education. I have an M.S. in Educational Administration. In addition, I have taught public high school for the last twenty-five years. I am more than qualified to coach and tutor the GED.

Golf

I have played golf since I was eight years old. I have caddied and spent summers and winters out on the golf course. I have worked with my brother who was one of the top golfers both in high school and in college level division one competitive golf and I have given lessons to children in order to teach them the game of golf and all that it entails. I have played in competitive golf tournaments and I am very familiar with the game of golf.

Grammar

My educational background teaching English for twenty-five years has qualified me to teach this particular subject area. I have a lot of experience working with English grammar with ESL, regular, and special students in public high schools. This should be a top subject that requires more emphasis in the public school systems.

Guitar

I have had several years of training on the guitar and have given lessons on how to play the guitar for several years. I used to play in a band before I started teaching school and I consider it as a hobby. I can teach basic music reading, lead and rhythm guitar and I really do enjoy sharing the experience of music with others.

Handwriting

With twenty five years of public education under my belt, I have been quite concerned about the poor quality of student writing over the years. With the increase in technology, it seems that handwriting has fallen by the wayside. I believe that it is important to maintain our sense of solid handwritten materials and capabilities to sustain us over the long haul. Writing is a fundamental skill that should not be abandoned because of technology.

Literature

In all of the twenty five years of teaching in public schools, teaching literature is what I enjoy the most. Classic novels like Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, as well as various popular novels such as White Fang by Jack London make wonderful companions when it comes to embracing the wonder of reading novels and opening up a new world to students in my classroom.

Phonics

My educational background in English and Speech Communication as well as my Masters degree in Education qualifies me to teach and tutor phonics because I constantly deal with this subject area every single day at school. Vocabulary, pronunciation, articulation, and phonics all work hand in hand in terms of communication with other people.

Public Speaking

I have taught Public Speaking for thirty years. I have a B.A. in Speech and Theatre and I have performed as a professional actor across the United States of America. My extensive public speaking background qualifies me to tutor in this particular subject.

Reading

I have taught public school for twenty five years. My extensive English Language Arts background has given me a new appreciation for reading and reading often and frequently. Reading is now a passion for me. I just ordered one thousand dollars worth of books at school.

SAT Reading

After coaching, tutoring, and helping young people for several years to pass the SAT, it has come to my way of thinking that reading starting at a young age is really one of the best ways that we all can help our young people to learn how to read more effectively. When they start out young, it is a real bonus for them when that time comes to take these SAT, ACT, and college entrance exams.

SAT Writing

My educational background is English Language Arts and I have also completed the New Jersey Reading Project which is endorsed by all major Texas public schools across the state. I have taught, tutored and coached the SAT and ACT and PSAT to many students and I am more than qualified to tutor reading, writing, and mastery of the previously mentioned standardized tests.

Spelling

I have coached competitive high school spelling for the past twenty years and my students always place at the top. Spelling has been a large part of my English curriculum at the school where I work. I have taught spelling in all of the English I, II, III, and IV courses that I have taught over the past years.

STAAR

I have taught English for thirty years in a public Houston high school setting. The STAAR test is the only test that our administrators worry about on a constant basis. I have had extensive inservice and staff development training in regard to the STAAR test.

Study Skills

I have taught and tutored in this subject for the past several years. Working one on one with students in public high school, private tutorial sessions, and at places like Huntington Learning Center as well as Sylvan Learning Center gives me the experience and background that the student needs to be successful in this area.

TAKS

I have taught and tutored and instructed the TAKS test for several years. As a High School English Language Arts instructor, I have ben inside of and upside down with the Taks test. Our school emphasizes this type of testing so much that I dream about it in my sleep. I have taught English I, II, III, an IV in High School. From short answers to essays and multiple choice questions, I have seen and heard all about it.

Vocabulary

I have coached University Interscholastic League Spelling and Vocabulary for twenty years and I have a vast amount of experience teaching vocabulary and expanding the reading comprehension of my students. Word mapping, vocabulary flashcards, and word lists all play a big part in terms of building a stronger vocabulary for all student learners.

Writing

With twenty five years of public school teaching, I have learned a lot about reading. One of the most important parts of reading is working to read on a consistent basis every single day. Reading can be fun and exciting and leads to new adventures and new explorations of worlds outside of the one we are in right now.
