I am currently tutoring professionally at the JEI Educational Learning Center in the Katy area. I am retired from a public High School in the Houston area and I have also been tutoring students on a weekly basis for several years in various subjects. Reading, writing, SAT/ACT, Taks, prep, STAAR prep, and English literature are typically the subjects that I tutor most of the time. I was also the UIL Spelling and Vocabulary coach at our school, and our UIL Spelling team that I directed won first place several years in a row. This UIL Spelling team was the first team in the history of the school to ever advance to the UIL State contest in Austin.
My educational background and love of education is reflected in the thirty plus years of experience that I have as a state certified public school teacher. I am willing to travel and go the extra distance for all of my students. I feel extremely successful working one-on-one with students, and I have extensive experience with various Sylvan learning center strategies as well as Huntington learning based strategies because I have worked in both of these types of centers in the past. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I passed the test that Wyzant gave me for ACT writing and I have had previous experience tutoring ACT in both private tutoring sessions and group sessions. I have thirty years of teaching experience. In addition, I have tutored several students on the ACT, SAT, and PSAT in the past number of years before Wyzant gave me their test online.

I used to play in a band before I started teaching school and I consider it as a hobby. With twenty five years of public education under my belt, I have been quite concerned about the poor quality of student writing over the years. With the increase in technology, it seems that handwriting has fallen by the wayside. I believe that it is important to maintain our sense of solid handwritten materials and capabilities to sustain us over the long haul. Writing is a fundamental skill that should not be abandoned because of technology.
In all of the twenty five years of teaching in public schools, teaching literature is what I enjoy the most. Classic novels like Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, as well as various popular novels such as White Fang by Jack London make wonderful companions when it comes to embracing the wonder of reading novels and opening up a new world to students in my classroom.
