About Robert

I'm passionate about education and have devoted my life to excellence in teaching. I'm thrilled to be a teacher. Each day, I look forward to taking an active role in helping my students achieve their academic goals. Let me tell you a little about me.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas in 1980. There, I majored in Psychology, History and Religion. Later, I went on to earn a Master of Arts degree from the University of Dallas, Irving, Texas in 1994. Later that year, I began teaching the Humanities at Texas Wesleyan University and Political Science (US Government) at Tarrant County College, Fort Worth, Texas.

I moved to Houston in 1999 and began teaching Communication Studies first as adjunct and now as Lecturer at the University of Houston Downtown. Between teaching assignments as adjunct and lecturer, I earned my Texas Teaching Certification in the Social Sciences and taught Dual Credit Political Science offered through Lone Star College at Aldine Senior High School from 2010-2014. I returned to the University of Houston Downtown as Lecturer in the Fall, 2014.

Recently, I've been certified as a Peer Reviewer by Quality Matters, which is a nationally recognized online teaching organization that has become "the gold standard" for online teaching. Additionally, I'm completing certification for the Online Learning Consortium for designing and implementing online course programs. Each year, I accumulate approximately 45-60 hours of continuing professional education in curriculum planning, educational technology and classroom teaching in order to remain current and sharp as a classroom and online teacher. This underscores the commitment I make to provide high-quality education as my life's vocation.

I have 23 years experience in writing, editing and delivering public speeches; 18 years of experience teaching Communication Studies and the Humanities at the University of Houston Downtown; 6 years experience teaching political science at the senior high school and college levels through Lone Star College, 3 years experience as an independent consultant working with business and the professions and private tutoring and 10 years designing, implementing and teaching online courses.

I'm easy-going, flexible and committed to helping students achieve their educational goals. I want to do the same thing for you and look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I completed 30+ hours of undergraduate work in Religion at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor and 18 hours of graduate coursework in Theology at the University of Dallas. Moreover, I was an Episcopal Minister for 18 years and know the Bible very well. In my professional life as a Lecturer, I currently teach Old and New Testament courses to upper-level college students. The Bible is a constant companion. I can read and comprehend it in ancient Greek as well as English.

English

Reading and writing have been specialty areas of mine since I was a child. I love books and literally devoured them throughout my childhood and adolescent years. Moreover, I have a lifetime of experience teaching reading comprehension and writing skills and coach senior college students through their capstone program in communication studies. Throughout 23 years of experience as an educator, I demand high levels of reading comprehension and writing in all of my communication studies and political science classes.

Government & Politics

I'm a university Lecturer and have taught Dual Credit U.S. Government for four years at a High School. I know what it takes to successfully complete collegiate level work at the senior high school level. I have a concentration in Political Philosophy in my graduate degree and can help students become successful in this discipline.

Political Science

My concentration in my Master's program was in Political Philosophy. My thesis was on the value of institutions in Book V of Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations". I have 6 years' teaching experience in core courses in US Government at the high school and college levels.

Public Speaking

I have 18 years of experience teaching public speaking at the University of Houston Downtown as part of the curriculum in communication studies. Additionally, I have delivered lectures to large groups of students and have addressed business groups in the art of public speaking and persuasion.

Reading

As an educator for 23 years, I have read extensively in the Arts and Humanities. Moreover, I teach Argumentation and Debate at the collegiate level and have provided consulting advice for reading for a recognized high school debate team. I can provide tutoring in Reading for elementary, middle school, high school and college students.

Social Studies

I am a University Lecturer and a previously certified Texas Educator in the Social Studies (Grades 8-12). I can teach all social sciences at the secondary level (psychology, history, government, economics, geography and sociology).

Writing

Throughout my 23-year career as a teacher, I have written lesson plans, educational papers, online coursework, and have reviewed textbooks for publishing companies. Additionally, I have written proposals for new college courses, modifications to existing courses and of course, detailed lectures for university classes. Previously, as a minister for 18 years, I wrote sermons and papers for weekly presentation and/or delivery.
