The University of Texas (Communications)
I have been homeschooling 3 of my children (grades k-7) for the past two years in all subjects including reading, writing, geography, history, math, science, logic and art. Under my instruction, I have given intense instruction in writing and reading to all of my children with remarkable results. My oldest child has received top scores on the SAT while the second child saw significant increases in her Stanford scores from 6th to 7th grade. I have served on the Curriculum Board which was responsible for researching and choosing all materials and resources for a local charter school. I have also written several curricula for Christian education serving ages kindergarten through adults. I have taught ages two through adults in Bible Study and Sunday School for the past 15 years.
As I have had my own children, education has become a passion. I have spent endless hours becoming knowledgeable on educational philosophies from Classical Education to Common Core and from teaching gifted children to those with educational differences. This combined with my experience teaching children of many ages in many different settings has taught me that everyone learns differently. What works for one may not work for another. Therefore, my approach towards tutoring is very individualized. My years of researching educational resources and techniques give me a broad base of knowledge from which to approach the needs of each student.
For new students I will begin with an assessment based on a review of current school work, any recent standardized test results, and applicable subject placement tests. These results combined with the clear expectations of what is to be achieved from tutoring will be the basis for an individualized plan for the student. This plan will be discussed with both the student and parents. In this way everyone involved can partner in the student' s future success. Whether a student is struggling in a subject or simply wishes to get ahead, this plan will ensure that the desired goals are reached. My approach to tutoring is methodical with lots of small, achievable goals. The student will gain confidence with each goal that is reached. Assignments for home will be challenging but not burdensome. These are designed to give practice and give ample opportunity for success. I believe that success with small things leads to confidence with the big things.
I have a passion for learning and a passion for kids. I love the moment when they reach mastery over a difficult subject. I have shared these loves with my own children, with neighbors and friends. I look forward to sharing my talents with your family and your student leading them to a more successful academic career. Heather is amazing! After several years of dealing with the school and other tutors, Heather was a blessing. She knew almost immediately what our son needed and worked with him and us.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught Kindergarten through 7th grade math using a variety of different programs including Saxon Math, Horizons Math, Holt, and Math U See. I utilize many different strategies to teach including games, memorization, and incorporating math into daily situations through word and logic problems. This technique gives a fresh, new approach to a subject that was once difficult and boring, producing enthusiasm for and mastery of essential math concepts which are critical to success in higher math classes.
I love to teach writing! Utilizing the techniques of the IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) and The Lost Tools of Writing, I address all the varying difficulties which plague writers. The skills I teach are applicable for all types of writing from scholastic to the business world. My ability to address issues in organization, sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary will improve the writing of any age student.
Although I was a Communications major, most of my actual training in Public Speaking came during High School. I competed in Cross-examination Debate for four years in addition to Extemporaneous Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Impromptu Speaking and Student Congress. In college, I continued my involvement by judging for Debate Tournaments. I have now had the privilege of coaching several children in Poetry and Prose Interpretation and serving as Coach for One Act Play. In a local school I started and ran a Speech Club, teaching communication and speaking skills to Jr. High students. I continue to hone my own public speaking through teaching Adult and High School classes within my church.
I use a phonics based approach combined with sight word when teaching reading. I utilize many different strategies to enforce theses skills combined with reading great books which are exciting and interesting to the child. I have developed an extensive reading list covering grades K through 8th which when used, not only increases the reading and comprehension skills of my students but builds their vocabulary. As a result, the student becomes not only a better reader but a better writer.
