About Amy

Hello!

I have been tutoring math and science for 10 years and have had great success with my students. I am a certified high school science teacher, with 3 years experience teaching Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology in Katy I.S.D. I majored in Biochemistry at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and am certified to teach high school sciences; however, my expertise is chemistry. Two of my main passions are science and mathematics – I love seeing them incorporated in everyday life! Outside of school/work, I love long-distance running, salsa dancing, and playing the violin.

Education:
I graduated in the top 5% of my high school graduating class with a GPA of 4.36/5.00. I went through a rigorous AP program at my high school, earning me stellar AP scores in most notably, sciences, mathematics, and Spanish. Afterwards, I completed a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry at The University of Texas at Dallas with a GPA of 3.52/4.00. Currently, I am pursuing a master's degree in Epidemiology at UTHealth with a GPA of 4.00/4.00.

Other Qualifications:
I have been tutoring and teaching science (most notable, Chemistry) for the past 8 years. At UTD I was highly involved in the Chemistry Student Association (CSA), a teacher’s certification program (UTeach), and was a university-paid chemistry and math tutor. Through these I have had the opportunities to work with several students and aid them in their understandings of science and mathematics.

Additional Information:
I enjoy connecting chemical concepts with physiological ones and often incorporate these ideas in my lessons. I have had several clinical experiences which have rooted this passion for health science in me including a shadowing experience with a cardiovascular surgeon at Methodist Hospital and several interpreting opportunities with nurses and physicians both in the US and abroad.

I tailor the tutoring experience to your goals. I can help you prepare for an upcoming chemistry test, give you regular homework support, prepare you for chemistry lesson you will likely encounter later to get ahead, or expose you to a more hands-on experiment-based learning experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I majored in Biochemistry. I have 3 years of experience teaching high school chemistry anatomy and physiology (heavy emphasis on biology) in Katy I.S.D. I also have 9 years of experience tutoring chemistry and am certified to teach high school biology in the state of Texas.

Chemistry

I have tutored chemistry students for the past 9 years with great success. I am passionate about math and science, particularly chemistry. I love passing that passion to my students. With an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and a Texas 8-12 general science teaching certification, I've led science camps, guest demoed experiments at various schools, and taught chemistry in Katy ISD for 3 years. I now work for a biochemical/epidemiological laboratory while pursuing my master's degree in epidemiology. I miss teaching, and enjoy funneling my passion for helping students understand chemistry through tutoring.

Helpful with my homework questions and explaining epidemiology basics to me. I have used her twice now and both times have been great. She is patient and great at giving you examples to help you reach the answers.
