As a retired teacher, I still continue to have the love of teaching in my heart. There is nothing better than seeing the "light bulb" click on when a youngster grasps a skill that has been challenging their skills. As a retired teacher, I still continue to have the love of teaching in my heart. There is nothing better than seeing the "light bulb" click on when a youngster grasps a skill that has been challenging their skills. As a visual learner myself, I use analogies and art to get concepts across to students. My goal is to turn every moment into a "teachable moment". I have a wide range of experience having taught math, primarily, but over the years I've taught all subjects; including art. Most of my teaching has been on the K-8 level, but with resource math as my primary subject that extended 15 years into high school. In that field, most of teaching has been on a one-to-one basis, as those students were missing key skills which keep them from progressing.

Receiving my degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching, I had planned to teach elementary school K-6, but with my minor in generic special education I was carried into teaching 6th grade through high school resource math for students who had learning disabilities; striving to bring them up to grade level. I have a knack for analogies and putting math into a visual forms that helps the students grasp the concept.

I have always been well-spoken and have had skill with the written word. Over the years I have not only taught math, but grammar as well. Since retiring, I have been writing for a newspaper, which was one area in which I never planned on using my writing skills. I always excelled in grammar and even on the college level I was much more successful taking tests which were essay in format rather than multiple choice.

Not realizing until I had finished college and was well into my adulthood; I was ADHD or ADD. Many of the students I worked with over the years have been ADHD and ADD. It was just a normal part of my day to keep them focused on the task at hand and used cues and techniques that I have had to use for myself, my child, and my grandchildren.

People often comment on my handwriting. I jokingly tell them that I should, since I'd been teaching it since I was in the third grade. When I would finish my work, my teacher used me as a peer-tutor for other students who had not mastered cursive writing. Later, in a short stint in business school, they suggested that I drop shorthand-mine looked straight off the textbook page. They told me I drew it rather than wrote it, and would never have any speed. Upon taking a term length ELA position after I retired, I discovered that the students with which I was working could barely print, much less write or read cursive. I immediately went back to my years teaching first grade, teaching them D'Nealian manuscript through their spelling lessons for nine weeks, then advancing to cursive the next nine week period.

All in all, I love to teach. I truly believe the longer you work with youth, the younger it keeps you. I thoroughly enjoy interacting with them and sharing knowledge with them. I want them to feel good about their accomplishments, and the only way to do that is through success!
