Hi, I’m Michael!

I earned my PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from UT Dallas in 2018, specializing in the development of new statistical methods. During my 7 years in the PhD program, I taught intro and advanced statistics, programming in R, experimental research design, and received extensive training in academic writing, presenting, and project management. I created homework assignments and quizzes, led biweekly review sessions for 1-15 students, and helped students design and carry out research projects.

Since completing my doctorate, I've been working as a freelance tutor and consultant, continuing my learning independently in order to 1) help my students with a broader range of topics, and 2) adapt my academic skills for application in business, such as advising data-driven decision making.

I love working 1-on-1 (or in small groups) because I love connecting with people, and helping to guide and ease your process, whether you're learning for school, or working independently.

I ESPECIALLY love tutoring statistics, because it's often so painful to learn, and it doesn't have to be!! (Really, I promise...)

Around my 4th year of teaching statistics, I began to recognize the patterns underneath the equations and processes that I had been teaching. It turns out, there are really just a few fundamental ideas that are slightly adapted to generate the whole field of statistics! These ideas can be explained using simple visuals. And once you grasp the big picture, all of the various details and equations become intuitive; After all, the equations are just different ways of pointing back to the same few basic patterns.

For example, null hypothesis testing boils down to 1 diagram. This same diagram is all you need to understand variance, standard deviation, Z-score, alpha, p-value, confidence intervals, power, and beta. Also, most other statistical methods rely on and build up from this 1 diagram.

I wondered, why didn't my teachers just explain it this way?!?

So, (like everyone else) I struggled through learni

Knowledgable and Patient

Helped me clarify the scope of my dissertation topic and offered relevant suggestions. Spent 45 minutes with him and it helped me to get focused and clarified the steps I need to take to come to my research questions. Will definitely hire again.

Exceptionally smart and savvy tutor

I have been tutored for statistics and R programming by Michael and think he is an extraordinary teacher. He is beyond bright but very talented at helping his students with the concepts and in guiding their work. In what was my first coding class, Michael played an essential role in the simplification of the material and helping me work through the daunting assignments. As a result, I got an A in the class and now have dramatically more confidence about taking additional coding courses! -Matt, 8 lessons with Michael

Organized and Structured

Statistics Instructions are of a high level of expectancy. I would recommend DR. MIKE THE MATH MAN, to any person doing this for the first time. Thanks for your consistency.

Very helpful!

Michael was super helpful with statistics. He explained things in a way I could understand it and sent supportive material. much appreciated and a great tutor!

intelligent and patient tutor-excellent

Michael has been a huge support in learning Statistics and R! His patience and ability to breakdown the process in an easy to follow format are unmatched by most educators. I will be requesting his assistance rebought the duration of my graduate statistics course. He’s truly an asset to those seeking to learn statistics!

Great tutoring experience

Michaels understanding of statistics and programming helped me make one of my most difficult problems manageable. He helped dissect a couple of statistical functions I was having trouble with. His exceptional knowledge made the equations seem easy. I would recommend Michael.

Knowledgeable, kind, patient and be sometimes funny tutor

Michael is working with me on statistics. He breaks down the information so I really "get it" and he provides real-life examples. I'm lucky that I found him here. Helping me to understand the statistics language in a visual way really helps me.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Michael allows the student to process the information at his/her own speed and understanding. He does a great job explaining the various statistical processes and lingo in a way that they make sense and can be applied to the current course work. Michael is flexible with his schedule and works to accommodate the student.

Knowledgeable and patient

Michael and I planned our attack on statistics. We went over covariance, correlation, variance, standard deviation and regression. Michael is very intelligent and I am looking forward to working with him again. We also got into p-values, t-value, alpha, null hypothesis, normalization and standardization.

Super helpful, patient, and kind

Michael was very patient and receptive to my needs as a student. He helped provide me with various resources to understand the material. I feel like I have a better understanding of multicollinearity and regressions.
