About Reese

I prefer a personal, customized tutoring style using traditional tools like dictionary and grammar handbook, but related to real life examples. I will start with these basic tools and your homework assignments. Together we will do exercises on the spot, practice designed to help you improve in the homework assignment areas that you find most difficult. When possible we will combine related subjects for maximum time benefit: also doing vocabulary improvement inside reading assignments, or working on grammar within a school essay, for example. If you are an ESL student, we can also practice speaking and conversation together. If you have begun doing longer writing assignments in preparation for college, or you are starting college, we can talk about research sources, database searching, and citation formats (MLA, APA, Chicago etc.). The possible areas we could explore together are as diverse as my background.
I am a semi-retired teaching librarian at Cedar Valley College, where I demonstrate research techniques and tools to classes and to students individually. Before I was a librarian, I taught ESL. After I ceased being a teacher and changed careers, I still kept tutoring English and all things related. I obtained my language teaching training at Georgetown University, from which I graduated summa cum laude. I have worked in several different types of libraries and I've worked with many different types of students. I have even worked with paralegal students, also having work experience in corporate environments myself. I think you will feel comfortable with me regardless of your skill level or age -- I have tutored both young people and adults. I am just minutes from a central location at the Irving Public Library. Whether we ever meet or not, good luck with your studies, and have a happy new year!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My native language is English, and I have studied it from all aspects: grammar, literature, writing, and linguistics. English was my undergraduate major at NTSU, where I tutored other students. In graduate school I studied linguistics and teaching English at Georgetown University. My first career was teacher, my second career librarian. After I ceased teaching I continued tutoring English and writing.

ESL/ESOL

My native language is English, and I have written for pleasure and studied grammar from an early age because I enjoy it. English was my undergraduate major at NTSU, where I tutored other students. I attended Georgetown University where I studied Linguistics and teaching ESL. My training including teaching speaking, vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and language testing. I continued tutoring and I taught at several small language institutes while finishing my master's degree, which I earned summa cum laude. Even after leaving teaching and becoming a librarian, I continued to tutor; I have 5 years of experience tutoring grammar and writing at North Lake College where I worked as a librarian. In fact, many of the students whom I tutored there were ESL students.

Grammar

Grammar is one of my favorite subjects, and I studied grammar for enjoyment from an early age. While attending NTSU for English I also worked for the Upward Bound Program teaching basic grammar to young students. During graduate school and in my first career I taught grammar to adults. During my second career as a librarian I continued to tutor and taught grammar workshops at North Lake College.

Literature

English with literature emphasis was my undergraduate major at NTSU, where I tutored other students. At graduate level I studied Linguistics at Georgetown University, from which I earned my master's degree summa cum laude. I taught ESL for a few years and then changed careers. Even after leaving teaching and becoming a librarian, I continued to tutor; I have 5 years of experience tutoring students with writing their papers, many of which are literature essays for English class. As a teaching librarian, I am experienced in assisting students with print research, database searching, essay writing, and citation formats, especially for literature essays, since Literature was my undergraduate emphasis and I myself have done much quality writing in this subject area.

Proofreading

I have used standard proofreading markup in academic and corporate environments for over 30 years, for proofreading my own writing, for grading student work, and for illustrating edits when tutoring writing. I can show you how to proofread your own papers and use this exercise to improve your accuracy in the future. Do you know what to do when you don't have software with spell-check and grammar-check? Moreover, sometimes these applications do advise you incorrectly! Learn to rely on yourself and be confident in your own knowledge. All you need is a pencil and your own brain.

Reading

English was my undergraduate major at NTSU, where I tutored other students. I attended graduate school at Georgetown University, where I studied Linguistics and language teaching methods, and my coursework included a Teaching Reading class specifically. I continued tutoring and I taught at several small language institutes while finishing my master's degree, which I earned summa cum laude. My experience teaching ESL included teaching reading. Even after leaving teaching and becoming a librarian, I continued to tutor; I have 5 years of experience tutoring grammar and writing at North Lake College where I worked as a librarian.

Vocabulary

English was my undergraduate major at NTSU, where I tutored other students. During the Summer I worked for the Upward Bound Program teaching basic grammar and how to expand vocabulary by understanding the parts of speech and word families. My graduate studies expanded to Linguistics, where I acquired teaching training at Georgetown University, including methods for teaching vocabulary. I continued tutoring and I taught at several small language institutes while finishing my master's degree, which I earned summa cum laude. During that time my teaching included how to expand vocabulary by understanding word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, and word families. Even after leaving teaching and becoming a librarian, I continued to tutor; I have 5 years of experience tutoring grammar and writing at North Lake College where I worked as a librarian. When I taught grammar workshops and tutored writing, I still used the methods emphasizing word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and word families to help students' vocabulary needs when appropriate.

Writing

English was my undergraduate major at NTSU, where I tutored other students. My graduate studies expanded to Linguistics, where I also acquired training in teaching ESL at Georgetown University. My training included how to teach writing as well.
