About Lisa

Greetings! I'm happy for the chance to share with you my love of and passion for education.

My name is Lisa, or Mrs. M. if you like, and I am a long-time resident of North Texas. I work as a Reading Interventionist for Dallas ISD through a local not-for-profit. Throughout the week, I meet with dozens of 1st-2nd grade students who need extra reading practice and support, both in and after school.

Before working with Dallas ISD, I taught English as a Foreign Language in Nepal, and also worked as a Teacher Trainer. Throughout my education career I have tutored students privately, in various subject areas: P/SAT/ACT/ISEE prep, High School English, Literature, and Algebra, UIL Number Sense, elementary reading and math, and study skills. Currently, I tutor students ages 5 - 16, in everything from Algebra II to handwriting.

I believe in setting high expectations for all students, and pride myself in creating a supportive environment where students can be bold in their learning! I see myself as a facilitator who is there to guide students as they discover their own strengths and interests, while ensuring they have the skills base to excel in whatever their future endeavors may be!

I am a Spalding Certified educator with extensive experience using Guided Reading and Orton-Gillingham methods in the classroom. My approach is always multisensory: integrating spoken language with the written word, with tactile engagement. I have an extensive library of intervention and enrichment resources from which to pull. I'm well versed in Common Core and "New" Math, and enjoy learning how each of my students learns, so that I can complement their learning style and support them on their academic journey.

Whether your student is struggling with decoding, confused by "New Math", or just wants to strengthen their study skills, I would be honored to assist. Please don't hesitate to get in touch! I will respond to your inquiry within the day.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I work as a reading interventionist in Dallas ISD with 1st and 2nd grade students who are at least 6 months behind in reading. In addition, I have worked for 4 years as a math tutor in basic math and number sense. The lessons I deliver are cross-curricular; I maintain an extensive library of resources across all elementary subjects. I am a certified Elementary Educator in the state of Texas.

Handwriting

As a Spalding Certified instructor, my approach is multi-sensory - including correct writing position and letter formation. I have experience assisting dyslexic and dysgraphic students. My methods are explicit, systematic, and student centered. I can teach manuscript and cursive.

ISEE

I have seven years' experience working with students preparing for lower and upper level ISEE. I also teach, full time, reading and language arts to lower-level ISEE aged students.

I conduct pre- and post assessments, teach test-taking strategies, and teach content as necessary.

I also offer proctor ed exams in which I observe students as they work, take anecdotal notes, and code tests results to create an individualized plan of study.

Phonics

I have extensive experience with Orton-Gillingham phonics methods, most notably Spalding Method and Saxon Phonics. As a full-time reading interventionist, I work exclusively with students who are 6 months or more behind in reading - the vast majority of our time is spent on decoding and word study. The resources available to me can guarantee that students will have the opportunity to learn in an engaging, multi-sensory environment.

Study Skills

As a private tutor, I teach strategies that can be used across subject areas and grade levels, and when preparing for standardized tests.

I begin by interviewing and observing students as they work, to see what their relative strengths are and where they have room for growth. I also gather information from family and teachers regarding assignment schedules and class expectations.

Observations and interviews give me the information I need to make meaningful recommendations: altering the study/woek area, changing schedule/calendar systems, prioritizing assignments, and estimating work time.

I am also a certified trainer for Pomodoro Technique.

Patient, kind and makes the lesson enjoyable for my daughter.

Lisa is teaching my 8 year old daughter strategies to enhance her reading abilities. She breaks the stories down and has her explain what's going on as she reads. We are very happy with Lisa and recommend her highly.
