About Paolo

I teach ancient Greek and Latin in college, but I love teaching younger students. I miss my early days as a teacher in middle and high school in Italy. In my tutorials, I focus on each student's specific needs. Often, students are very gifted but are not confident with terminology. As a result, the book's or the teacher's explanations can be hard to follow. That's why it is smart to look for a tutor who can devote undivided, individual attention. I have a very broad spectrum of competence when it comes to Latin, so I am sure I can help. Besides teaching my college students at UD, I am tutoring middle-school and high-school students. I also serve as rater/grader for the Texas LOTE in Latin and on the National AP Latin exam administered by the Educational Testing Service. I feel that with my background and my experience with AP Latin I would be an ideal tutor for any Latin student. I teach ancient Greek and Latin in college, but I love teaching younger students. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Greek

I have been teaching ancient Greek to college students for over twenty years. I first studied ancient Greek in college and eventually continued my training in classical philology with a PhD in classics. I started tutoring my peers while in college and as soon as I graduated I was hired to teach ancient Greek and other subjects in a high-school seminary in Italy. Nowadays I teach US college students at all levels, from elementary to advanced. In my tutoring, I focus on enhancing individual talent and on strengthening grammar background.

Italian

As a native speaker of Italian and a licensed teacher of Italian and history in the Italian public school system, I offer not only native fluency but also depth and breadth of knowledge about my country of origin, its language, and its history and culture. In tutoring in Italian, I privilege the student's specific needs but I especially enjoy working with students who need to practice Italian for business, academic, and personal reasons.

Latin

My passion for teaching Latin language and literature led me to obtain a PhD in Classics at Princeton. Before, during, and after my graduate studies, I have taught Latin at all levels. At the moment, I am employed as a professor of classics at the University of Dallas, where I teach ancient Greek and Latin. As an academic, I am a published author but my passion is teaching. I love teaching and I especially enjoy teaching middle and high school students as well as college students.

Public Speaking

I have honed my speaking skills in a variety of settings, both formal and informal. As a college professor and PhD dissertation advisor, I have trained students in composing, editing, and delivering short speeches for many types of audiences. In my own speaking practice, I emphasize clarity and cogency. In teaching others, I base my coaching on the speaker's unique, individual style. I believe everyone can be a good speaker but coaching and experience are necessary to become a great one.

Extremely Helpful

We needed help with pieces of Ancient Greek in our production of the play An Iliad. Paolo was brilliant. He was extremely helpful and gave us exactly the information we needed, about the Greek text and The Iliad itself. Absolutely perfect.
