DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION (Master's)
Environmental Science (Graduate Coursework)
I am an MS Development Communication graduate with a major in Educational Communication and minor in Environmental Science. I have completed PhD units in an Environmental Science program and have attended a non-degree program in Community Education. My Bachelor's degree is in Development Journalism. I served as managing editor cum writer for seven years as well as an editor in some writeshops. I had been invited as speaker and lecturer, discussing topics such as Communication process, communication material development, social marketing and community communication.
During my college years, I volunteered as a tutor where I helped college students in English and Math (specifically Basic Algebra). I love numbers especially problem solving and logic. I also love editing, proofreading, copy editing and layouting.
I believe that learning should be fun and enriching. My strategy in tutoring is finding out the learning curve and learning style of my students in order to maximize the learning process. I build on the student's potentials and strengths to complement his/her weakness. I teach as well as motivate students to find enjoyment in learning. My method is simple and non-intimidating. It is an "out-of-the-box" kind of approach that makes use of any available resources that would enhance learning.
I only do a minimum of 2-hr tutorial per session as I believe less than 2 hours of session is restrictive and stressful for student to grasp and absorb the topic being discussed. I have a 24-hour notice of cancellation, otherwise the appointment is considered as a "paid-schedule". In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have produced five marketing materials such as flyers, leaflet and training kit using Adobe InDesign. I have explored and used several functions and plug-ins of this software.
I had been involved in publication work for seven years doing proofreading, copyediting, writing, layouts, and graphic design. I have produced more than 30 journals, booklets, manuals, brochures, leaflets, technical bulletin, flyers and primers. I have been using Pagemaker, Publisher, InDesign and Photoshop in layouts and graphic designs for more than 10 years.
I have attended a video-documentary class during my Master's program in Development Communication. I had an on-the-job training on video-documentary. I have produced three-video documentaries, one of which is part of my Master's thesis.
I have trained staff to produce a "how-to" video. Likewise, I have edited videos using a linear and non-linear editing program such as Adobe Premier, VideoAction, Moviemaker, etc.
