About Patti

In March, 2015, I received my Ph.D. in Special Studies in Education. Presently, I teach Dual Credit English 1301 and 1302 and Integrated Reading and Writing in two community college districts. For the 10 years, I also taught all levels of developmental writing to community college students who wanted to improve their writing skills or desired to pass the TSI exam. Except for five students during the 10 year period, all of my students who took the TSI exam passed after the courses. As a tutor, I also helped students receive higher scores on ACT, SAT, and CLEP exams.

In addition, I taught English III & IV, reading, creative writing, speech, and literary genre to students at an at-risk alternative high school for six years. More than 84% of those students passed the TAKS exit level exams. My experience also includes prepping 5th and 6th-grade students for the STAAR reading exam , tutoring elementary students in general subjects, and working with 1st- and 2nd-graders in reading as an on-campus tutor in a public elementary school.

As a writer, I published more than 300 freelance or staff newspaper articles. In addition, I have written more than 50 technical manuals for a circuit board equipment manufacturer, a hardware student manual for a for-profit university, a historical information book about a town's pioneer community, and a tour book of free one day recreational spots. Other credits include being a co-writer of a festival guide.

My teaching philosophy is that every student can learn. However, all students do not learn at the same pace or at the same knowledge level. Students need to start at their knowledge levels and build new information from there. I implement culturally diverse learning techniques to incorporate the student's background and learning style into learning. In that respect, students not only feel more comfortable learning, but learning becomes relevant because their personal interests become part of education.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a substitute teacher and an on campus tutor in a independent school district, I taught kindergarten students and students in grades 1st through 6th grade. Besides also privately tutoring elementary students in math, English and reading, I teach older fours and kindergartners on Sunday mornings. When teaching K-6, I change activities at least every 10-20 minutes because young scholars lose concentration. All materials are selected for their grade. interest, and intelligence level. I received my Ph.D. in Special Studies in Education.

Reading

I teach integrated reading and writing for the Dallas Community College District and am a certified reading specialist. In addition to recently working as a campus reading tutor at a public elementary school and privately tutoring elementary and middle school students, I taught reading at an at-risk high school in Fort Worth. My background also includes being a state grader for the 7th grade TAKS writing test, which is now the STARR test.

SAT Reading

I am qualified to teach literature because I teach ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302 (College Composition I and II) for Tarrant County College (TCC), including the summer sessions. At TCC, ENGL 1302 includes extensive instruction in fiction, poetry and drama to teach to different techniques of literary analysis. In the spring of 2015, I will also teach both courses at Richland College. In addition, I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in English.

STAAR

I tutored the STAAR test for three months for 6th-grade reading/ELA classes and 8th-grade reading classes at local charter schools. I have served as a test administrator for the STAAR. I have also completed STAAR courses offered by the school district. I completed courses for TELPAS and am calibrated with the district for 6th- to 8th-grade. As a certified 8-12 ELA/R teacher I taught English I, II, III and IV in the public high schools.

TAKS

My TAKS areas of expertise are the 10th- and 11th-grade English language arts exams. My passing rate with students at-risk is 84% or more. In the past, I also assisted the TEA in the 7th-grade writing portion of the exam.
