I specialize in tutoring reading, writing, and English skills. I enjoy and have experience tutoring people of all ages. I tutored for five years at SMU, teaching an array of subjects including history, psychology, English grammar, writing, and literature, sociology, and study skills.
I also have worked as a substitute teacher for grade school children and as a private tutor for individual children with difficulty concentrating.
I graduated with a degree in English Literature Phi Beta Kappa and completed coursework toward a masters degree.
I like to discover the potential in my students and encourage them to reach for their goals with an expectation of success. I love to see the look of sudden understanding in their eyes as they grasp the meaning of something formerly mysterious. I am familiar with dyslexia and ADD problems. I enjoy teaching and motivating students. Learning is fun and important, and I try to show them in a supportive and engaging way that this is the case in life and why it is necessary. Michale is an excellent tutor. She was eager to teach, respectful, and knowledgeable. I'm an international student, so I had trouble understanding the material but Michale was always patient and helpful. She helped me to write essays for English, Psychology, and Philosophy classes and I've made all "A's." I wouldn't have done that without her help. I highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Art is one of the joys of life. It is a wonderful vehicle for the expression of emotion and appreciation of the natural beauties and horrors of life. From the exquisite paintings of the French Impressionists to the cruel misery shown in the face of the subject of Edvard Munch's "The Scream", art spans mankind's emotions.
My father was an artist and I watched him work throughout my childhood. His work was on all the walls of our house. It was wonderful living in a museum. I took art history and art appreciation classes in college and considered going to Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles before deciding to become a writer instead. I still draw and paint and it is a great release after a stressful day.
English is an important language to master because it is an international language. The British Empire brought English to many parts of the world. Wherever England had colonies English was spoken, and since "The sun never set on the British Empire" most well educated people speak English as well as their native language.
With the rise of the United States as a world superpower, English was further spread around the world. For world leaders to have access to the American media, they must speak English. Standard English is the English of educated people. That means the proper use of grammar, a strong vocabulary, the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form is a necessity. Superior English skills open doors for people in all walks of life.
The ability to read and understand what you have read is essential to most college classes. English, History, Microsoft computer classes, Math word problems, foreign language instruction, pre-Med classes, psychology and sociology studies, you name it, you have to have and be able to apply a good vocabulary to get good grades.
In college students must read not only their text books, but also a variety of novels in literature classes, and be able to write essays that help them pass tests.
There are many ways to improve student reading ability, and I make a plan for each of my students that fits their individual needs. If they are college bound, I use one set of plans, if they are younger, another set, but always based on the individual needs of each student. It is best to be proactive about this and work at it in times before a student is under the gun with no bullets, so to speak. Never wait to do what you can do right now. Putting off dealing with problems only means that those problems will surface again and you will be under more pressure than previously. Think and plan ahead. Perhaps you know the old saying "if you don't plan, plan to fail".
The ability to write clear, accurate prose is a must in business and life in general. Nothing makes a person look worse than a poorly written, badly constructed letter. Your friends will think less of you for not taking the time to learn to write correctly and your boss may do more than frown on a poorly written proposal or report. Writing is a building block to communication and opens many doors. It is often the first view people have of you and determines if you will have the chance to move to the next step. Investment in your writing skills is never wasted. The ability to use standard English in a vibrant way can make you many friends.
