Do you want someone who is good with small children? I taught first grade for ten years, fourth grade for fourteen years, and kindergarten through fifth grade gifted and talented for six years. I have held an Iowa teaching certificate, Nebraska teaching certificate, and a Texas teaching certificate. In addition, I have earned hundreds of hours of continuing education credits. Do you want someone who loves kids? I have three grown children and eight grandchildren. Also, I am a Sunday School teacher, and I have run Vacation Bible School several times. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a Master of Science degree in elementary education. I realize that children learn in different ways, so depending on the child, I may emphasize manipulatives for math, hands-on-activities for science, and audio-visual aids for language arts. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a teaching certificate for K-8th grade, and bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education. In addition, I have 30 years of teaching experience. I know when and how to use audio-visual aids, manipulatives, and hands-on activities.
Both as a first grade teacher and as a fourth grade teacher for a total of twenty-four years, I was required to teach handwriting. In first grade I taught manuscript writing, and in fourth grade I taught cursive writing. It was my responsibility to teach the proper hold on the writing instrument, the proper positioning of the paper, and the proper formation of the letters of the alphabet.
Having taught first grade for ten years, it was necessary for me to teach my students to read. Phonics was essential to this. I taught my students about the consonant sounds, the various vowel sounds, the digraphs, and such rules like "when there is a silent 'e' at the end of a word, it makes the vowel say its own name."
