About Amy

I have proudly been a Special Education certified teacher, now beginning my 16th year. I currently teach at an at-risk high school and also at the district's discipline alternative setting. My subjects taught are math and English, but within that setting my calling is working with students at risk of dropping out of school - those with behavioral problems, with emotional disturbances, family problems, discipline issues, juvenile/court issues, drug or substance abuse issues and anger issues.

Many times the above issues dramatically impact a student's ability to learn. My goal is to help a student work through those issues, while also being able to learn the skills that will help prepare them for not only success in the classroom, but also for life after school. That could be preparing them for post secondary education, or learning life and career skills that help them successfully transition to a job or career upon graduation.

Having Adult A.D.D. myself provides me with unique insight into the mind of a student with ADD or ADHD. And also removes the excuse many of those students sometimes try to use to escape the responsibilities and expectations of being a successful student. I have also worked with all of the populations of students listed above, in addition to students with dyslexia and those on the autism spectrum, but primarily Aspergers.

I think my ability to successfully teach this very unique population of kiddos come from my belief that I have been called to work with students that others find challenging. Sometimes even TOO challenging. I take great pride in the many letters I have received from my students over the years thanking me for "believing in me when others didn't", and being that "voice in my head" telling me that you would be disappointed in me if I didn't do the things I needed to be doing (or NOT doing! Lol) . I love my job. I love "my" kids. And I consider it a privilege and a blessing to get to be a part of a young person's journey to becoming a successful student, citizen and human being. Please contact me to visit about your needs, or the needs of your student. I very much look forward to talking with you. Amy

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have been a special education teacher for elementary, junior high/middle school and high school for 15 years. A preponderance of my students had/have ADD or ADHD. In addition, I myself have ADD for which I take medication when necessary. I have been quite successful in managing student behavior while also focusing on building self-esteem, which often translates to students being able to more successfully focus on their classwork.

Special Needs

I have been a special education teacher for elementary, junior high/middle school and high school for 15 years. As a special Ed teacher, I have worked with student with varied and sometimes multiple disabilities, including Aspergers, dyslexia, anxiety disorders, multiple learning disabilities (LD), physical handicaps, mental and emotional disabilities, ODD, ADHD, panic attacks and even one student I believe was becoming schizophrenic. I have been quite successful in managing student behavior while also focusing on building self-esteem, which often translates to students being able to more successfully focus on their class work. Not only in my classroom, but also in their other classes. I'm not really sure what more to add to qualify for working with kiddos with special needs, such as Aspergers. (Please note that I do NOT call them Aspergers students. They are STUDENTS with a disability that happens to be Aspergers .). When I first started teaching, I was lamenting my ability to teach just some, but not all of my students because of behavior issues. My principal told me that until they could successfully literally sit in a chair properly and pay attention, and have appropriate school behaviors, it was impossible to teach them. I don't agree with that statement, but it did teach me something. I had to build relationships with the students, and have successful strategies and behavior expectations in place before I could reach some of the more difficult students. I have built upon that belief for over 15 years and am very successful and effective at reaching, and teaching those difficult kids.
