About Ms. Devril

Dear Student, Hello and Welcome

My interest in tutoring began while studying for my Associate Degree in Arts at Houston Community College in August of 2003. I worked as an Academic Tutor with a federally funded educational program called TRIO or better known as Student Support Services. It was here in this program that I had the privilege of tutoring first-generation college students such as myself. The program was intended to assist this population of students with staying enrolled in college and earning a two-year college degree. However, the better news is that many of the students in the program completed their two-year degree, and went on to earn their bachelor’s degree, and I was personally involved with several of those students. Working with first generation college students remains one of the most memorable and awesome experiences of my life.

As a personal tutor, I continue to work with college students specializing in MLA Writing Format (developing essays), Research Assignments (major and minor) and Psychology undergraduate and graduate coursework. I received an award for Psychology Honor Graduate Student in May 2013 and Outstanding Student in Psychology in May 2007-2008.
In addition to academia, I can also help college students with short and long term Career Objectives which includes developing a Resume, Cover Letter, Letter of Interest, and even exploring volunteer opportunities which research shows can lead to full-time employment.

I have adopted a Demonstrator or Personal Teaching Style in which I clearly demonstrate how the various steps lead to a successful writing or research assignment, and then provide an opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and skills via weekly homework assignments.

To help students determine if I am the best fit for helping them to achieve their academic goals, I offer a free consultation. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, and generally meet with students in a public setting (public library, school library, etc.). Tutoring times are developed around the student’s work and class schedule to allow for more flexibility.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. I am excited about the possibility of working with you to achieve your goals and look forward to meeting you.

Best Wishes,
Devril

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

In the Spring of 2013, as a graduate student, I successfully passed PSYCH 5335 Career Counseling with a final grade of A. After graduation, I worked as a Rehabilitative Case Manager with MHMRA (Mental Health Mental Retardation) in Texas City, Texas providing career services to clients who were diagnosed with a major mental illness. I assisted clients with the following:
1) Developing short-term career goals
2) Initiating the job search (accessing online job banks, networking among friends and family, scheduling appointments with employment agencies, etc.)
3) Accessing and Completing online employment applications (Setting up online password, applying for multiple positions with same company, etc.)
4) Updating or Developing a Resume
5) Mock Interviewing

Psychology

In May of 2013 I earned my M.A. in Psychology. In the same year I was awarded "Honor Graduate Student of Psychology." In May of 2008 I earned my B.S. in Psychology, and was awarded "Outstanding Student in Psychology" from May 2007 to May 2008.

My first tutoring session with Ms. Devril overall was a great experience. I plan on continuing to work with her throughout my graduate program. She and I will work closely together to improve my writing skills. I was very impressed with the improvements we made within our first session on a rough draft copy of my paper. One of the reasons I feel that my first session with Ms. Devril was a succes
