Hello, my name is Laura. I would like to tutor elementary and/or special needs children. My own children are special needs. I have been homeschooling my two daughters for two years now through a Charter Independent Study school. One of my daughters just received her Certificate of Completion from high school. My other daughter is in the 8th grade heading for a high school diploma. Before homeschooling, I worked as an aide in my younger daughter's public Special Day Class teaching spelling and math.
My education is in Mathematics and Theology; a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Houston and an M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary. I am a United Methodist pastor but I am currently on family leave in order to teach my special needs children. Before pastoring, I worked as a Systems Analyst for Chevron Corporation.
Finding what works for each individual child is so important to their learning. It could be a little extra time, a little extra quiet, or a lot more movement. I would love to share with your children what I have learned teaching my own children.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have led many Bible studies with children, individually or in groups. Studies with a multi-generational slant can be a lot of fun, mixing children and adults. I was trained in theology at Asbury Theological Seminary and have been pastoring in the United Methodist Church since 1996. I have led, facilitated, written, and participated in many Bible studies through these years. Before that, I grew up in the Presbyterian Church where I was a part of Sunday School and Youth Groups. I tend to be more conservative theologically, but love a good discussion with other points of view. I figure we all have a lot to learn from each other.
My college education is in Math. I have had experience in Special Day classes to help children learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide. I taught Spelling in Special Day class using Phonics and Sight Words. The children had fun and looked forward to their turn. I have taught History and Science to my own children in Homeschool.
I have a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Houston and thoroughly enjoy doing elementary level math through pre-algebra.
My children have been in independent study over the last two years and it has been my responsibility to teach them. We have used different methods to accomplish this including using manipulatives and songs.
