I care about my students, their needs, and their concerns. I currently teach physics at a major four year university and love what I do. I have a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Houston, M.S. Physics from Drexel University, M.S. Industrial Management from Purdue University, M.S. Theology from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, and a B.S. Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee. Academically, I received the Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Scholastic Honorary and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society awards for academic achievement. My broad education brings a variety of approaches to tutoring. I am at ease in communicating the practical approaches from engineering in tutoring as well as the more theoretical approaches of math and physics. I use similar techniques as used with the case method in business school to successfully engage students in tutoring.
I have worked with a variety of students in ability and background and am comfortable tutoring across a wide range of student diversity. I am comfortable at all levels in science and physics as well as mathematics. I have worked broadly in education with one of the state education regions as Director of Educational Outreach for the physics department. In doing so, I worked directly with high school students and teachers which further acquainted me with student concerns and needs. That coupled with my experience at the university prepares me to tutor successfully.
My goal is to assist students to succeed in their education. I am an experienced teacher and have worked with students individually and in the classroom for twenty years, and my students excel in their course work. I work with students from middle school through the university. My philosophy of tutoring focuses on the student, student concerns, and student needs to assist students to master their education. My approach addresses the subject concepts before engaging the solution of problems in the subject of interest. Students do best when they master concepts before engaging problem solutions. My tutoring encourages development of problem working skills and good study habits. I work with students in the manner that best fits their learning. In doing so, we develop a simple model that includes visualization of the problem, learning how to restate the problem in the student's words, and learning how to restate word problems in mathematical equations.
I have an extensive background in corporate research and management and in education. That experience greatly benefits my tutoring. I have a broad education which also assists my tutoring. My education covered engineering, business, physics, and theology. I have experienced a wide range of approaches to learning, and students will gain from that knowledge. I always look forward to tutoring and seeing students excel.
Efficient and Effective
John taught Physics in a simplistic and understandable manner. He was thorough and was precise with all of his explanations. He gave the confidence that I need in the classroom.Carmen, 3 lessons with John
Tutor came prepared to cover each question
John walked me through several difficult question clearly and directly. If I had issues with the solution he was explaining he easily moved into more detail to provide more in-depth explanation. He spent a good deal of time preparing for our session by reviewing a couple dozen physics questions I submitted and was prepared to cover each one completely.Alec, 2 lessons with John
He's very kind and patient. He'll go over similar problems as many times as you may need. Definitely recommend him to you.Emma, 13 lessons with John
Absolutely the best!
John was extremely knowledgeable and was able to take difficult material and make it understandable. In just a few sessions my daughter not only knew the material, but was much more confident. We could not have asked for anything better than what John was able to accomplish!Carol, 4 lessons with John
Recommended! Exceeds Expectations!
My son and I commend John, our tutor, in possessing the resources to be ardently thorough, by all exemplary standards, in my son's tutorial sessions. He was able to expound proficient methods of comprehension, toward achievement in the subject matter. John possesses a prolific perception in a systematic approach to explication of relationships in mathematical concepts. John demonstrated that he is able to systematically challenge an individual with confident recognition of the aptitude that is innately possessed. In John's articulate sharing of instructional methods, my son could proceed to meet his expectations academically, with confidence, in analytical and comprehensive problem solving techniques.JULIA K, 30 lessons with John
You won't find better!!!
We have been working with John for a couple months...WONDERFUL, you won't find a better tutor. John is VERY patient with my son, who has disabilities. He always makes sure my son "totally" understands what he is teaching him and keeps it very positive. He also tries to get to the root of the problem when it comes to what my son is not understanding. John is always on time and works with whatever time we need. My son enjoys working with John which I can say...is a first. We have used many tutors through the years and he always dreaded them he actually looks forward to working with John. If you are reading this, you are trying to pick a tutor which can be very overwhelming...STOP... try one session with John, you won't find a better tutor for you child. We wish we would have found him years ago!!!Karen, 62 lessons with John

Great tutor and really relates to his young students
John has been able to get math performance out of my 18 year old daughter that no one to date has been able to do. She took her ACT test this weekend and informed me that the Math section was "easy". I can tell you there is only one reason the Math section was "easy" and that was because John had her so well prepared!!!! He is an excellent instructor and really knows how to get his student engaged with the subject material. I just wish we had met him earlier. Thank you so much John.Sally, 9 lessons with John
