My name is Kayla! I'm a 9th grade ELA teacher in a small town near Houston, Texas. Teaching is my passion! I absolutely love my job, my subject, and my school. I love seeing the growth in learning from the beginning to the end of the year. Even small steps forward are a big deal!

I'm knowledgeable in all aspects of 9th grade ELA curriculum, including grammar/sentence structure, reading, literary devices, editing/revising, expository writing, research writing, and MLA formatting. Part of my job includes test preparation. 9th graders in Texas take the English 1 EOC STAAR test, which is required to take and pass for graduation. In addition to ELA content and skills, I also teach my kids test-taking skills, including time management, close reading, annotating, and dictionary use. I will not only help your student with ELA content, but am also available for STAAR test prep tutoring. I have had professional development in both expository (9th grade) and persuasive (10th grade) writing, so I'm available to help with 10th grade STAAR prep as well.

Even though I teach ELA, not everything I use in my classroom involves reading pages out of a book or writing paragraphs of information. Some elements of English are much better understood using technology, games, art, music, and even short videos. I like to incorporate many different methods of learning to accommodate different types of learners. In school, I learned best by reading information but kids today seem to be more engaged and learn better using technology and hands-on activities. I try to make learning relevant and fun for teens by choosing resources and materials that they can identify with and that get them hooked! I am always willing to individualize learning and tweak my lessons to fit the needs of students. I will never give up on a child no matter how hard they try to push me away. I'm a firm believer in giving multiple chances and positive reinforcement.

Before I was a high school English teacher, I was a mental health professional. I studied psychology for 7 years. I have a bachelors degree in psychology and a masters degree in clinical and forensic psychology. I keep up to date on current studies and progress in the field of psychology. I have worked in the mental and behavioral health field off and on for 5 years. This means I have both educational and hands-on experience in the psychology field!

I've taken several english classes while in college. A big portion of psychology (education and work) includes writing. In each class I was evaluated for my use of APA formatting, appropriate grammar, and varied vocabulary appropriate for the audience. I've written several papers in each class over the last 7 years!

I'd prefer to tutor online because I have kids. However, I'm open to meeting in my home as long as you don't mind my kids running around. On weekends, I can meet in public places that have Internet access (Starbucks, public library, etc.). During the summer, I'm available most days from 9am-1pm. I'm also available some afternoons and evenings and have mostly open availability on weekends. During the school year, all of my availability will be some weekday evenings and most weekends. If these times don't work, it may be possible to work something out. Just shoot me a message and let me know what you need!
