About John

With approximately 25 years as an Engineer, Counselor, Instructor, Adjunct Professor, and Executive Coach for Fortune 100 companies, my greatest passion has always been to equip and empower folks at all ages for much greater effectiveness with everything they put their hands to. From teaching music to my peers while in High school, to finishing my Board Certifications as a Professional Counselor and a Master Life Coach just recently, I have had a lifelong joy of continued learning. But what makes my style of coming alongside someone unique is that I struggled to overcome several learning disabilities as a youngster. By also being a Temperament/Personality Assessment Specialist and knowing quite a bit about learning styles, I thoroughly enjoy discovering what really makes each of my clients come alive, with tremendous breakthroughs. Whether it's boosting someone's strengths or equalizing their weaknesses, each person is uniquely designed for something absolutely special. And even helping each one to get through the tougher areas that are typically required in school, it can always be turned around as a blessed opportunity, with a renewed mindset, through strategic encouragement.

After getting to know each one of my students, each of the sessions are goal-oriented with clearly defined strategy, progressive homework assignments, periodic assessments and progress reports, and all of this in a way that helps the student feel challenged but not overwhelmed. I hold myself to a high standard and request regular feedback, for which I am very responsive to. Whether it's Career Development, Test Preparation, ESL, Psychology, Music, Social Studies, Science, or a variety of other studies, coming alongside each student with targeted tutoring is one of my greatest joys because of seeing those lights turn on, when previously there might very well have been great difficulty and feelings of helplessness.

While trying to be flexible with my time, I do have a 24 hr. cancellation policy, but definitely offer make-up classes. My sessions are individual in nature but group sessions are a possibility as well, if so desired. I am happy to travel to a student's location as long as it is basically distraction-free, and a nurturing environment for a quiet, comfortable and progressive learning experience.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you and your student achieve amazing success. Thank you for this opportunity to partner with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Astronomy

Ever since I was in Elementary School, I frequented the Burke-Baker Planetarium in Houston, as well as other telescopic study centers, watched every show I could on Astronomy, wound up majoring in physics before I eventually shifted to Engineering, with a self-declared minor in Astrophysics. I have always thoroughly enjoyed the study of space, it's bodies, forces, and postulations of exactly what might truly be in our "last frontier".

Bible Studies

After being raised in church, having a serious heart dedication to the Lord at a very young age, making a life-long dedication of the study of God's Word, I became the President of the Baptist Student Union in College, was active in Chi Alpha (A/G ministerial student organization), was called into ministry at 23 years of age, and spent several years of intensive Biblical studies earning my certification and Ministerial License at age 36. After being a Licensed Christian Counselor for 17 years, I went on to become a Senior Pastor and church planter for another 5 years. To say the least, I have taught the Bible to various aged young adults for many years, and absolutely love God's Word, and making it truly understandable, especially to the uninitiated.

Career Development

After receiving my Master's in Counseling in 1987, I have spent the last 25 years helping folks of all ages with Career Development. I was even hired recently as the Director of Career Development and Training for a large, national organization. In my spare time, I have come alongside folks of all ages, helping them become unstuck, find a genuine connection to their hearts passion, their strengths, personality/temperament, and best fit position, with a very broad range of possibilities creatively.

Chess

Ever since being in Jr. High, with a true love of the game, and getting with friends to respectfully compete and study the game, I was not only in the Chess club High School, but occasionally found it interesting to study strategy books on the subject. Mostly what I enjoy is tapping into another person's style of playing and encouraging their creative spontaneity to meld with appropriate strategy in winning.

College Counseling

After receiving my Master's in Counseling and attaining my Temperament Certified Professional from Keirsey (MBTI), I made a long-term commitment to helping folks at various ages before, during and after College, achieve their true hearts desire/direction. After going all the way through college myself as an Engineering major, and winding up changing to Psychology in the very last semester, I know well the craziness (and emptiness) of trying to get through it all for the wrong reasons. Over the last 25 years, I have found hundreds who really have done the good work of tapping deeply into their own heart's passion, holistically.

Computer Science

With attaining my Telecommunications Engineering degree and studying Computer Science off and on for 30 years as a hobby, I thoroughly enjoy the art of helping others overcome learning obstacles, whether in school or on the job. I have been a Training Manager with several Fortune 500 companies for roughly 20 years. Much of this time has been spent learning various software applications and finding all sorts of ways to translate such to folks who have learner's block with the computer.

Elementary Science

Realizing that not all engineers are truly good at Elementary Science, I found it particularly interesting most all of the subjects relative to science all through my own journey. Helping kids to not only understand Elementary Science, but to truly find it interesting is an extreme joy of mine.

ESL/ESOL

To be able to help someone who greatly desires to learn English, is a joy that have quite a few opportunities to engage in. From working with kids who are newly adopted, to working with adults from different countries, it is absolutely amazing to see the joy of someone truly "getting it". There's just something truly amazing in the heart of a person who desperately longs to solidly be one in the culture of an English speaking country. There have been a number of times where I was accidently put into a situation where I had to interpret for a whole class of only foreign-speaking
individuals...but only knowing English personally. There is truly an art-form to helping convey meaning from one language to another...especially when there seems to be no obvious bridge.

GED

From overcoming learning disabilities, understanding English as a second language, to making up for serious (if not traumatic) lost time in High School, I have helped quite a few folks be able to effectively grasp the core competencies, in order to gain their hard won GED. Helping folks at various ages, who were not so privileged as to attain their High School diploma has been a repeated joy of mine, so that they don't have to struggle to get what they are out to achieve. Many times, they are much more appreciative than the average person, having received their entrance approval into the work-world.

Geology

For years I have been a rock collector, spelunker, and avid student of formations. Part of my work-study jobs that paid my way through college were often assisting the Geology professors because I loved to "hang" with the Geology students. If a person could have a triple major, mine would definitely have been Geology.

Microsoft Outlook

Having been a corporate Training Manager with different Fortune 500 companies for over 20 years, I started using Microsoft Outlook and all of it's facilities early on. By necessity, I have had to continually progress with each new version, so as to be versatile and fluently adaptive for all of my clients, whether in Health care, Automotive, Oil & Gas, Banking, Retail, Aerospace, or nonprofit Ministry. I have helped many folks over the years (from young to old) get started, and find ways to progress past many learning fears, resistances and hardship obstacles, to find true fluency in Outlook usage. Whether Calendar or whatever form of delivery, Outlook has a way of being a fabulous tool, or one's forgotten, useless appendage...based on a person's willingness to simply start using it as a friend or accomplice.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Since Microsoft PowerPoint has become the standard presentation software in industry, I have quite frequently used it and trained many others on its comprehensive functionality. A lot of folks understand it to a moderate degree, but many don't truly know enough to take advantage of its broader-based usefulness, much less ease of use. As a Training Specialist with several larger organizations, I have frequently helped folks become quite proficient with Microsoft PowerPoint.

Microsoft Windows

Having been a corporate Training Manager with different Fortune 500 companies for over 20 years, I started using Microsoft Windows and all of it's facilities early on. By necessity, I have had to continually progress with each new version, so as to be versatile and fluently adaptive for all of my clients, whether in Health care, Automotive, Oil & Gas, Banking, Retail, Aerospace, or nonprofit Ministry. I have helped many folks over the years (from young to old) get started, and find ways to progress past many learning fears, resistances and hardship obstacles, to find true fluency in Windows usage.

Microsoft Word

Ever since Microsoft Word has become available, I have steadily progressed to becoming a "Super-user" while working in several different industries corporately. Critically but accurately being rated as not just proficient but expert has often been a pre-requisite for a number of contracts I have successfully acquired professionally. As a Training Manager within several Fortune 100 companies, I have frequently empowered and equipped folks with their understanding of Microsoft Word.

Music Theory

Having taken 6 years of piano as an Elementary and Jr. High student, I followed that up with giving piano lessons to my peers in High School to earn extra money. Not only being in Band for 6 years on various instruments, I also competed in UIL all through High School. From my college years till now, I have often had bands that I pulled together myself. I have been a keyboard worship leader for roughly 30 years in churches of sizes between 30 and 3000 in attendance, where I worked to organize different vocal and instrument parts. To say the least, I absolutely love dynamically encouraging young folks to find their enjoyment in music...especially in truly understanding the foundational constructs of such.

Physical Science

Physical Science is absolutely the solid foundation upon which most other major directions of professional degrees are awarded in college. If a person can feel a true connection and understanding to such, they will more than likely progress fairly comfortably through the next natural levels. Being an Engineer for 30 years, I found it almost always went back to any of my colleagues starting out with a genuine fascination to something in the study of Physical Science. This is why I have such a passion to help kids really find their place in it's understanding.

Piano

Having taken 6 years of piano as an Elementary and Jr. High student, I followed that up with giving piano lessons to my peers in High School to earn extra money. Not only being in Band for 6 years on various instruments, I also competed in piano UIL all through High School. I have been a keyboard worship leader for roughly 30 years in churches of sizes between 30 and 3000 in attendance, where I worked to organize different vocal and instrument parts. Piano, whether for personal or public inspiration, has and will be one of the greatest passions of my life...and mostly with sharing it with others.

Psychology

Having received my Master's in Counseling roughly 25 years ago, I have studied and applied psychology to literally thousands of individuals to directly help them with their lives. Having been a credentialed counselor, therapist and life coach, I truly love the discipline of psychology in all of it's varied forms, theories, theorists, strategies of applications and process assessments. To see young folks taking their first steps to discovering the world of psychology (and it's application to their lives), is absolutely fascinating.

Public Speaking

From being an extreme introvert who absolutely hated and totally feared being in front of any sized crowds, much less speaking individually and directly, to making a living as a nationally traveling speaker doing seminars, workshops and retreats on subjects of counseling, training and life coaching, I know extremely well the hurdles one must often overcome to rise to such an occasion (of freedom of expression). To get a point across where people are brought to action, land a message of the heart, and lead people through declarative inspiration, is not only analysis of the interaction through study of dynamics, but finding out how the heart of one connects the message with the individual.

Reading

Overcoming several learning disabilities, I had to learn the hard way (and with great discipline) how to deal with the resistances (internally and externally) to effectively read and comprehend well, from Elementary all the way through graduate school. Reading, comprehension and true understanding with connection will powerfully support and be the foundation for most all other connections. It has been one of my greatest joys, to help dozens of others have significant breakthroughs in their personal ability to read and truly comprehend well.

Religion

After being raised in church, having a serious heart dedication to the Lord at a very young age, making a life-long dedication of the study of God's Word, was called into ministry at 23 years of age, and spent several years of intensive Biblical studies earning my certification and Ministerial License at age 36. After being a Licensed Christian Counselor for 17 years, I went on to become a Senior Pastor and church planter for another 5 years. To say the least, I have taught the Bible to various aged young adults for many years, and absolutely love God's Word, and making it truly understandable, especially to the uninitiated. But I have also spent a tremendous amount of time studying other Christian and other world Religions because of finding them extremely fascinating...much less, truly wanting to relate to folks from all over the world...especially when they didn't necessarily believe as I did.

Social Studies

Being an Engineering graduate, I quickly learned that what separated the micro-focused ones from the ones who could truly relate on many levels to folks, were the ones who had a breadth of healthy grasp of Social Studies. From early on in Elementary School through High School, I was a living example of one who initially couldn't stand any form of Social Studies, to one who truly enjoyed many different forms of such, due to teachers who took the time to make these different "Studies" come alive. I thoroughly enjoy relating such motivation to kids who might need a helping segue into life.

Sociology

Studying people groups, how folks of all backgrounds inter-relate, patterns for application, and statistics from accurate and unbiased assessments, have always been a hobby of mine...not just through my graduate degree in counseling, but all my life. To understand humans inter-relatedness, is to truly understand psychology, humanity and healthy relationships at all levels. Sociology is a fabulous foundation for helping a person launch into a myriad of fabulous careers.

Study Skills

I have 25 years as an Engineer, Counselor, Instructor, Adjunct Professor, and Executive Coach for Fortune 100 companies. I have spent the better part of my life helping all aged folks learn how to effectively study, so that they don't have to struggle to get what they are out to achieve. Studying is a true art-form whether most realize it or not. To find freedom and true success in great study skills often takes fairly serious effort and dedication. But the end result is well worth it!
