Yale College, Yale University
University of Michi (PhD)
I am a former college professor (Ph.D., Psychology), businessman and researcher on computer-based training and performance tools. I have taught statistics, experimental design, technical writing and various subjects and levels in psychology (introductory psychology, personality theory, research methods and psychological measurement (i.e. testing)) to undergraduates and graduate students. My specialty is statistics, and in addition to teaching I have served as a statistics consultant on technical publications in areas including psychology, chemistry and medicine.
I also teach algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, finite math, discrete math and calculus, since I believe that a strong foundation in the basics is essential for success in all technical fields. Once the basics are mastered, the rest is straightforward. My teaching approach is both intuitive and technical, and I use real world examples with whose characteristics we all already well acquainted. I work closely with students taking on-line courses, since a difficulty students face in on-line courses is getting questions answered early enough to keep from falling behind.
I have published a number of articles in academic journals, and can teach you how to write in journal-article format (and also improve your overall writing skill). For those whose work requires writing competitive proposals and grant applications, I have written winning proposals and successfully managed programs totaling over $70M. I have taught students of all ages from high school through graduate students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees, in psychology, nursing, business, engineering and education. I especially enjoy working with adults who are going back to school after being in the real world.
I look forward to working with you and contributing to your success. I am a former college professor (Ph.D., Psychology), businessman and researcher on computer-based training and performance tools. I have taught statistics,
Richard is able to work with students from all grade levels, through the doctoral level. He is patient and works with you to understand any problems you may have. I highly recommend Richard to anyone who is in need of help!
First impressions are essential to a good working relationship and Mr. Richard was great! I am accustomed to working with Ph.D level professors so I felt comfortable when I realized he is a very sharp, quick thinker and his teaching personality is in his head, which means it does not take much to catch up with what I'm doing.
Mr. Richard was an excellent tutor. He was a wonderful instructor, very understanding, had a lot of patience when I did not understand a topic, and was very willing to take the time to stop and explain a concept thoroughly (using examples that I could easily relate to). I would highly highly HIGHLY recommend him and I will be tutoring with him for the rest of my semester in Psychology. If there is ever a time to ask for his assistance, he would be the first person I would ask for help!
Richard is an excellent tutor! He is patient and thorough! He is also very flexible and asks all the right questions. He doesn't just show you the work, he makes sure you understand the concepts.
Mr V has helped my daughter from failing precalculus to a passing grade in a couple of sessions. Very satisfied..
I did not comprehend the material online so working with Richard was my saving grace! He explained the problems in great detail.
Richard has tutored both my 18 and 14 year old son's. My high school senior increased his statistics average from failing to an A. He is excellent!
Richard arrived on time and quickly grasped the purpose of the assignments in question. He reviewed my answers and corrected me when necessary. His assessed my work as competent which gave me, a novice, the confidence I needed. I highly recommend Richard and will certainly call on him again should the occasion arise.
Richard is a top tutor in mathematics and statistics. He goes step-by-step and shows you the whole process to make sure you understand how to do it correctly. I highly recommend him for your tutoring needs. I have used him several times and he's very flexible to meet your schedule.
As a statistics beginner it was important that we go slowly and that there was full explanations of how things worked. When I didn't understand Richard was able to show me another way of doing it until I understood the concepts.
Richard was the key to my success in my grad school Quantitative Business Analysis course, a.k.a. Statistics. I met with him twice a week to work through exercises and assignments. He was patient and accommodating to my schedule and needs for completing the course successfully. Richard genuinely cared about my ability to learn the material and improve my grade. After failing my first two quizzes my grade was a 70%. I began working with Richard and both my assignment and quiz scores improved. I finished the course with a 90%. I enjoyed working with Richard and could not have gotten through the accelerated course format without him. I highly recommend Richard.
Richard is by far the best Statistics tutor ever. For anyone who is considering taking a statistics course and need some help, Richard is your guy. I remember my first conversation with him before we ever met, he said "statistics is not easy but it is logical". Those words to me were profound, as it helped me understand that it is not so much that I lacked the ability to pass this course but with help I can definitely make it. He has a knack for breaking statistics down in its simplest form, that a fifth grader can understand it. I love that he shows up on time with his writing pad, formulas and any other necessary tool to help his student. There is always an 'aha' moment when you realize that previously in class we discussed this topic but I didn't quite get it, until Richard made it simpler. Thanks to him I aced statistics! I know choosing him as your tutor will be as rewarding for you as it was for me. He is simply the best.
Richard is very knowledgeable of pre calculus and he is very good at teaching my daughter how to understand it better.
I found a great tutor that fit my son's needs--deep expertise in Statistics, available by Skype, reasonable cost, great preparation before lessons, and good rapport with my son. My son says the tutor not only knows his stuff, he is also effective in teaching it. They have had 4 lessons, and I plan to continue. The first lesson was extra long so the tutor could get my son back on the right track before a test the next day. My son made a passing grade on that test, and made 80 on his next test. The customer service representative was also very helpful in my search. She listened carefully to my criteria and responded quickly with a number of qualified choices for a tutor, and an offer to research more if I asked. The payment system is convenient. I really like the summaries that the tutor completes after each lesson. There is enough detail that they also serve as a study aid for my son.
Mr. Richard is very knowledgeable about the topics covered in my Advanced Statistics for my PhD program. He explained the concepts with examples and visual aids. I would recommend him as a tutor. I was able to pass the course with a satisfactory grade of a B even though I could have passed the course with a low C. He answered questions in person and via email, so as you can see he was available whenever I needed a question answered.
Richard is very patient and understanding. He explains everything with ease and in ways that I understand. He does not rush through the lesson and takes time explaining it to me. He has been extremely helpful and has helped me gain my confidence back. He believed in me and my abilities from day one. He was the best
tutor I could have asked for.
I have greatly enjoyed working with Richard this semester. He is very patient and tries to find different ways to explain materials. I will be using him again next semester for pre-calculus!
Mr. V is one of the best STATS tutors. He has helped me through this course twice and every time he has found a way to explain the information in a way that was understandable. He would go over my tests and homework to make sure I was doing the homework right and also to make sure I understood what I did wrong on the tests. He is also very patient. If you do not get the information the first time, he'll find a different way to explain it until you understand the concept. He will always answer your phone calls or texts if you ever have questions, even if he is out of town.
He always asks at the beginning & end of the session what you want to work on, if he's covered the material, any other concerns you may have. He brings the subject to life by using real world examples; which is not something I thought about until he asked me, but is extremely relevant for my content area. I rated it at as 4 stars b/c I was unprepared.
Dr. Richard is the best tutor by far! He explains everything thoroughly when I do not understand a topic. He comes to our tutoring sessions ready well in advance! Dr. Richard proved himself worthy from what he learned from his graduate years in school. He comes on time and replies to my emails and texts with no more than one to two hours. I would highly recommend him for anything anyone is looking for in a tutor. When he taught me trigonometry, statistics and pre-calculus I received an A in all classes!!
As a doctoral student it has been difficult for me to find a tutor who can assist me with the advanced concepts involved at this level of study. I have had been struggling with statistics and am so happy that Dr. V. is able to assist me in making what is often a intimidating subject understandable and pertinent.
Dr. Richard always comes prepared with examples and he explains scores, tables and models of statistics with visuals. He uses extreme patience and treats me with dignity. Thanks Dr. V!
Richard has been a great tutor so far. He has been available when needed and has even offered to help me outside of our scheduled times. He offered to review my work if uploaded and sent via email. I find this to be call on his sincere character. He makes me feel like I WILL SUCCEED! Thanks Richard for passing on your years of knowledge to this newbie. You make Biostats seems as if it is not as complicated as it seems.
Richard is very soft spoken, communicates clearly, and is very patient. He did an excellent job of preparing Olivia with the math section of the SAT and PSAT. I highly recommend him and would not ever hesitate to call him again if we needed him. Oh, and he is always on time.
Richard explains statistics very logically and thoroughly until I fully understand all concepts. I look forward to each session and learning the next step!
This is my fourth hour this semester with Richard. He has been invaluable and highly accessibly through our tutoring sessions. His teaching style has made statistics a manageable subject. He not only answers my questions but prepares for our subsequent sessions. I would highly recommend him and continue to utilize his knowledge.
I am so grateful to have had Richard as a Biostatistics tutor this semester. My success in statistics this semester was a direct result of his ability to make this subject simple and comprehensible.
Richard is my tutor for my graduate level statistics course. He explains everything in depth and knows his material very well. I have also been receiving As on the material I have turned in. This guy is not lying - he truly knows his stuff. If you are a graduate student, you must get Richard.
Richard has been awesome tutor for Statistics! I highly recommend it since it can be a tough subject. He really knows how to simplify the information and gives good examples if you don't understand a concept. He is very patient if you don't understand a concept and will figure out another way to explain it. I'm so thankful for having found Richard if you are struggling with this subject do not hesitate to contact him you won't regret it!
She got a 100 on her last algebra test. Her confidence has skyrocketed and she has begun to enjoy math again! Thank you so much.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
A real advantage in learning mathematics is that all of your knowledge carries forward. The skills you learn early will be used in all of your future mathematics courses. So once you learn the basics, you will build on them as you progress. The first skill is algebra. The concepts (e.g., variables and inequality) and manipulations (e.g., solving equations and factoring) you learn in algebra are a kind of language that will be used in geometry, algebra 2, trigonometry, calculus, probability and statistics. These subjects use the same notations as do algebra, so once you master them you can move forward into more advanced topics.
Algebra is not necessarily easy, but it is completely logical. There is nothing you learn early that will be contradicted by later lessons. My approach in working with you on algebra 1 and algebra 2 is first to assess your familiarity and comfort with basic concepts, and explain and clarify the ones you need some improvement on; and then to work on the specific areas of your assignments, such as solving equations with radicals or graphing functions. I can almost guarantee that you will have “Aha! So that’s how it works!” moments as algebra becomes more familiar and understandable.
Algebra 2 builds on the foundation of algebra 1, especially in the ongoing application of the basic concepts of variables, solving equations, and manipulations such as factoring. My approach in working with you on algebra 2 is first to assess your familiarity and comfort with basic concepts, and explain and clarify the ones where you need some improvement; and then to work on the specific areas of your assignments, such as solving equations with radicals, exponents and logarithms, evaluating and simplifying complex polynomials, graphing and solving complex functions, and imaginary numbers. Your understanding and familiarity with Algebra 2 will increase, and you will be more confident that you can solve most problems you will encounter.
I have been a college professor teaching statistics to both undergraduates and graduates, and have tutored statistics through WyzAnt since 2012. I am especially proficient in the statistics used in biostatistics applications, which are used in most health-care courses of study and research. These techniques include those used, for example, to determine the effectiveness of medication, or in epidemiological studies of disease transmission or causes of death. The statistics used are standard means comparisons, but also analysis of variance and especially multivariate regression and correlation - and I have used and taught all of these.
Calculus introduces concepts and procedures basic to advanced mathematics and engineering, including differentiation, integration and advanced function analysis. Differentiation and integration require learning new methods of manipulating expressions, but the steps are straightforward and relatively easy to master. The types of problems, in business, engineering and the sciences, that cannot be easily solved unless calculus is used, and the answers provide critical and sometimes surprising information and guidance for real world problems. My approach to calculus is to ensure that you know the basic tools, explain the concepts and methods using concrete examples, and providing enough practice so that you are confident in applying the techniques in your work and in your other classes.
Finite mathematics focuses on topics such as compound statements, probability and statistics, vectors, matrices, and sometimes applications to linear programming and to the research method. I have taught compound statements, vectors and matrices in algebra and precalculus; and probability, statistics and the research method in statistics courses to business, psychology, engineering, education and nursing students at the undergraduate and graduate level. I use my teaching and real-world research experience to provide a solid basis and concrete examples to ensure that the students complete the course with good understanding and confidence.
I have taught prealgebra and algebra as part of preparation for college level statistics and probability. Algebra is the "language" of much of mathematics. Once you learn the basics, you can easily tackle more advanced areas. My approach uses real world problems and how to apply algebraic principles to solve those problems.
Precalculus is a very important course, since it is a comprehensive review of topics covered in earlier mathematics courses as well as an introduction to concepts central to calculus, such as limits and the difference equation. A goal of precalculus is to ensure that there are no gaps in the student’s knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and other topics covered in previous courses to get in the way of understanding calculus. My approach to precalculus is to eliminate the gaps by explaining completely the concepts of the topics, and working problems so that the techniques and approaches to solving them become second nature.
Probability is the basis for statistics; if you can solve problems in probability, you are on the way to understanding and solving problems in statistics. My approach is intuitive and rigorous. You will learn the why as well as the how, using familiar real world examples.
I have a Ph.D. in psychology and have taught introductory psychology, personality psychology, statistics and experimental design, and psychometrics at the college level. I can teach you basic facts, terms and concepts - the vocabulary of psychology -so you will be prepared to master more advanced areas, including performing and writing up psychological research in scientific format.
I have taught statistics and experimental design at the college level for seven years, and have consulted on statistics for research projects in psychology, medicine, chemistry and psychological measurement. My approach leans heavily on concepts and application; you will learn to analyze problems and use the correct methods for solving them.
I have been a college professor who has taught both undergrads and grads. Part of my teaching process, especially for freshman, was helping them gain study skills so they could succeed in my class and in college generally. Some of the techniques I use are: 1) completing a survey on study skills to determine a baseline; 2) completing a detailed, week-long log of study (time, place, subject, distractions) 3) choosing an appropriate place and time for study; 4) developing a protocol for improving important study skills; and 5) setting small, achievable goals so the student sees progress. I have found that this procedure helps the motivated student approach learning more confidently, and it usually leads to better grades and more satisfaction and enjoyment of learning.
Writing clearly is a necessity for almost all scientific, technical and business careers. I have published a number of studies in scientific journals and have written successful grant proposals totaling over $60M. I can teach you how to write in technical format, including standard reference and graphic formats.
