Salt Lake Community College
Ever since I was little, I’ve sewn my own Halloween costumes, doll clothes and dress up outfits. Later on when my older sister, Criscell and I were confronted with expensive prom dresses, I decided to put scissors to fabric once again. This is where I gained a love for sewing and creating my own masterpieces. My schooling at Salt Lake Community College’s Fashion Design program has only nurtured and deepened this passion of mine. I've learned so much over the years and I love showing people all the amazing things you can do with a yard or two of fabric.
I grew up in a musical family. My father was, and still is, the band teacher at my old high school, and all growing up my mother taught flute lessons in our home. Because of this I gained an appreciation for beautiful music. I've been playing violin since I was 9 years old. I was concert mistress in the Idaho Falls Youth Symphony for two years, and was 2nd chair, 2nd violin in the Idaho All State Orchestra my senior year of high school. Thanks to my parents, music is another passion of mine and I love seeing that passion come alive in other young students. The initial tutoring session with Chalise worked out well. She had time, patience and skill to share with my nine year old daughter. Looking forward to working with Chalise again.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been sewing since I was a small child and went to fashion design school in Salt Lake City completing the following classes: Intermediate and Advanced Sewing (completed a men's dress shirt, a pair of jeans, and a little black dress), Textiles (completed a 4" 3-ring binder full of 100+ samples of different types of fabrics along with their descriptions), Knitwear (working with jersey knits and a serger), Corset Making (completed three corsets), Pattern Drafting I and II (learning how to draft patterns on paper and test using muslin mock ups), Patterns by Measurement (using a person's specific measurements to create a pattern for them, completed a pair of shorts and a dress for myself using my measurements. The dress is now being manufactured to be included in Shabby Apple's fall 2012 dress line), Millinery (completing three hats from felt blocks and straw blocks) Portfolio Development (creating a complete portfolio of design inspiration and dress line ideas), Fashion Illustration (learning to draw the fashion croquie, and learning to portray various different fabrics). As mentioned before, one of my designs is being produced and included in Shabby Apple's fall 2012 line.
