Hi, I'm Ziyaneh! I graduated from U of M with a Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience. Throughout high school and university, the classes I enjoyed the most were ones where I was engaged and asking questions, valuing what I learned. Because of this, I earned A's in all my high school and university math and English classes. I did well in class as my passion for learning grew, and my goal is to foster this passion and excitement within younger students.
In school, I learned most effectively by asking questions and breaking down the material into its details. This usually involved creating guides or visuals to help me picture what was happening. I brought this same approach to tutoring when I was in high school helping junior high students with their math homework each week. We'd figure out what standards they needed to work on, and then I would teach any concepts they were struggling with in class. We would draw diagrams to physically visualize the math, and create steps to use when working independently. For extra practice, I would guide them through additional problems, and I'd encourage students to ask questions so they understand the logic we used. My goal is to work patiently with the student so they are confident and competent.
When tutoring students in English and reading, I want them to be engaged so they stay motivated even when the material is difficult. Especially with younger students, we work on understanding vocab and sentence structure to build a good foundation. I ask guiding questions to assess the student's understanding of the material, and work on their comprehension of structure and logic. When students get stuck, I have them create visuals or flow charts to process and connect their ideas. This helps them when formulating answers to questions and essay prompts. I also work with students on understanding grammar and effectively structuring their ideas, helping them become better writers.
