Hi! I’m Kathy, but my students know me by HKat. I’ve been teaching in Montessori classrooms for 25 years and I love adolescents. I have a special affinity for working with younger adolescents. I understand their sensitivities and work to help each individual discover their strengths. My greatest joy is helping students get an AHA moment. I use a document camera with my students and I've found that this really helps with online learning.

Hi! I’m Kathy, but my students know me by HKat. I’ve been teaching in Montessori classrooms for 25 years and I love adolescents. I have a special affinity for working with younger adolescents. I understand their sensitivities and work to help each individual discover their strengths. My greatest joy is helping students get an AHA moment. I use a document camera with my students and I've found that this really helps with online learning.

I help students identify what they already know and coach them as they stretch into new areas and develop deeper understanding. I help students discover the why not just the how of problem solving. I practice an integrated approach to math studies as much as possible. Math is the language of the the sciences so it is imperative that students develop skills in math so that they can work and use those skills in science.

I enjoy helping students gain confidence. I believe that competence begets confidence, so practice is key. One important objective I have is to reverse any negative feelings that the young adolescent may have about math and science. I tell my students, “ A day without math is like a day without sunshine!”.

I show students how they can be problem solvers and that there always multiple ways to approach a problem. I've been teaching pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry for 25 years and have worked with high school students teaching Algebra II for several years as well as supported students to succeed on the math sections of the ISEE and SAT. I have also taught Integrated Physics and Chemistry in middle school and biology, chemistry and AP Environmental Science at the high school level. I have supported students with one-on-one coaching and tutoring as well as teaching an integrated curriculum throughout my career. I am a TX certified teacher as well as hold AMI certification at the Adolescent Level.

The best tutor we’ve had - kind, knowledgeable, patient.

My daughter has a weekly session with HKat for help with her 8th grade Science class. It didn’t matter if they were learning the periodic table or building a model cell structure, HKat knew the material and was able to talk my daughter through the assignments, making them easy to grasp. Thanks to HKat, I’ve watched my daughter’s anxiety lessen and her confidence improve over the course of the year. On top of that, her grade has moved from a D to a low B. I can recommend HKat wholeheartedly for her patient and empathetic approach, as well as her rock solid grasp of the material. Don’t hesitate to book a session with her!

Catching up on geometry

My son was struggling in geometry and we decided we needed a new tutor. Kathryn spent about 10 hours with him over the past two weeks getting him caught up and ready for his test. He’s found her explanations helpful. Kathryn’s been very accommodating and easy to schedule with. She even took the time to make him a summary sheet of what he needed to remember for his test. We look forward to continuing to work with her for the rest of the year.

Knowledgeable and very patient tutor.

Kathryn was very helpful, knowledgeable, and patient! My was son was unable to connect online with his laptop however she was able to explain and teach everything to him through the phone. I was very impressed by the way she could teach without FaceTime or having to write things in front of him in order to explain. He understood her better than his high school teacher whom he has everyday in class face to face. I definitely recommend her and we will continue to schedule more tutoring classes. We’re thankful in finding someone who can teach with patience.

Extremely knowledgeable and extremely warm as a person

I have a teenager. Add the mention of a tutor, and you don’t usually get an enthusiastic response from them. My daughter is doing Advanced Biology and Advanced Geometry tutoring with Kathryn and I’m delighted. Kathryn made a Biology definition my daughter was struggling to understand (even after watching a video the teacher gave her) very easy (my daughter s words, not mine) . And I can see she is struggling less already after just 2 sessions. Katrhyn also knows how to get to people. When my grumpy teenager told me she wanted to have more tutoring sessions with Kathryn, I was pleasantly surprised!

Kathryn has been a really big help for me this semester! She explains topics slowly and thoroughly and is incredibly patient and accommodating. She will show you shortcuts but will also take the time to go step by step depending on what works for you. Lessons with her are comfortable and fun as well as educational.

My son had an urgent, complicated bio lab report that needed to complete. Kathryn spent 2.5 hours with him, thoroughly explaining the concepts and helping him complete the report. She also followed up via email to ensure the report is actually complete the way it was supposed to be. I would highly recommend her to others.
