About Allison

I provide a warm and encouraging environment for students to make the mistakes necessary for learning about music and exploring their creativity. My passion for music has inspired me to pursue teaching and performance professionally in order to help others achieve their musical dreams.

My ultimate goal for my instrumental students is to gain all the skills necessary for creating meaningful musical experiences for themselves. Specifically I try to help them gain clean technique, a pleasing and expressive tone, basic understanding of music theory, and enough knowledge of music history to play with appropriate expression. I try to accomplish these goals by clearly explaining careful and deliberate practice techniques that remove the stress often associated with daily practice.

My goal for music theory and ear training students is to form a clear understanding of the logic behind those subjects that will benefit them for years after they have stopped tutoring.

Students of all subjects will reap the benefits if they are committed to a regular practice schedule, are attentive during lessons, ask questions, and are honest with themselves about what is and is not working.

I began my teaching career in college while earning a Bachelor's in Music from Southwestern University (magna cum laude). I currently play as a soloist and with groups including AURORA: Trio for Flute, Harp, and Cello, the Shimmer Flute Choir, and Sounds of Silver Flute Quartet. I am also an active member of the Music Teacher's National Association and volunteer coordinator of the Houston Flute Club.

I am here to help! Feel free to ask me about lesson specifics or anything else that will help you decide if I am the right teacher for you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I received formal ear-training while earning my music degree and use these skills on a regular basis. As a performer, ear-training is used for intonation as well as blending harmonies and understanding the harmonic progressions of a piece. As a teacher, ear-training helps with identifying student errors. I use my formal training and real-world experience to help students identify scales, intervals, and chords, as well as improve their intonation.

Flute

I have a Bachelor's in Music Performance degree with flute as my principle instrument. I have been playing flute since I was nine-years-old and have played in bands, orchestras, flute choirs, and chamber groups since then. I started giving private lessons during my second year of college and have not stopped since, helping students learn the fundamentals of playing the flute as well as guiding them through competition solos and etudes.

Music History

As a professional performer I am knowledgeable of music history from Medieval through 21st Century music in order to perform with stylistic accuracy. I have successfully tutored students in music history, helping them understand the key style differences among the main eras as well as discussing different composers and their contributions. Students even learn to identify when a piece was written just by listening with no other information.

Music Theory

As a classically trained musician I have a thorough understanding of theory and have been helping others, including AP students, comprehend the underlying logic behind musical concepts for years. I can help you build and identify scales, intervals, chords, and chord progressions.
