About Alex

Hello Students and Parents,

My name is Alex. I am a Ph.D. student at Rice University. I have been tutoring maths, finance, physics, and Mandarin Chinese for around 5 years since 2011. The age group of my student are from 10 to 30 years old, and ranges from elementary school to college and to graduate school. I have tutored in total around 60 students. My students' average grade in class are A (many came from C before they came to me), and many got admitted into prestigious colleges and graduate schools.

I provide excellent tutoring service to my students. I have extensive teaching experience in the following subjects:

* Business : Finance, Accounting, Economics, Econometrics
* Maths: Algebra I, II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, Probability, Geometry, etc.
* Science: Physics
* Test Prep: GMAT, SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, TOEFL
* Programming: SAS, Stata, C
* Language: Mandarin Chinese

Here are my credentials:

* I major in Finance in my Ph.D. pursuit and it goes without says that my Maths is excellent, and have deep understanding of business, particularly in finance.
* I also won third prize in national Physics competition in 2009.
* For Test Preps, I personally scored 710 out of 800 in GMAT test (92 percentile), and 107 out of 120 in TOEFL test. My student score an average of 1300 in their SAT test.
* I use SAS and Stata to conduct my research every day, so I'm proficient in such programming language.
* Mandarin Chinese is my native language, and my students can speak and read Mandarin very well.

Any student who tutor with me, our goal is not only to get an A in class, but also to fully understand all the materials in the course, and know how to apply them. I don't just show you how to do the problem, I try to help you or your child understand the subject so you can use that information and skills and become independent of me or any other tutor. Moreover, I teach each student efficient learning methods, time management, and organization skills, as there are so many things going on in school and life.

The reason that I am so good at tutoring is not only because of my credentials and solid background, but because of my passion for tutoring and my patience. I greatly enjoy tutoring, and I find teaching very rewarding. I like working with the young generation and sharing knowledge with them.

Typically I choose the teaching method that suits each individual student the best, based on their learning abilities and goals. For example, for students that need concepts to be broken down into pieces, I have great patience and explain the terms or formulas slowly and use daily example to compare with them until they understand. For students that think and understand very fast, I do a lot of practice with them to sharpen their skills and throw out difficult and tricky questions to test their understanding. I also have quite a few experience tutoring students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, ADHD, etc. I worked with them quite well, and I am familiar with how to engage them in the studies and the best ways to teach them.

In addition to tutoring, I also like outdoor activities, such as hiking and swimming.

Feel free to contact me to schedule an appointment via Wyzant. I would be happy to nail the study with you together and enjoy the fun in the math world.

Sincerely,
Alex

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I am an expert in Calculus. My students get an average A in Calculus class. Many come from C before they came to me.

Chinese

Chinese (Mandarin) is my native language, and I have tutored seven students Mandarin. My students can all speak very well Mandarin now and can communicate in speaking and writing very well in both daily life and in school. Moreover, I won National Chinese Competition Award during high school in 2007. I have also tutored Chinese back at Tulane University at the tutor center.

Econometrics

I got my B.S. in Mathematics from Tulane University, and got an A for the Econometrics course. I also have tutored several students in this subject, and most got A in their class. Also, Econometrics is the basis in my daily research, so I use it frequently and am expert in this subject.

Also, Linear Algebra is in my daily research in finance, so I use it very frequently and am expert in this subject. The best way to teach Linear Algebra is to help the students understand the formulas and do as many practice as possible.
