About Phil

The desire to become a teacher was the focus of my studies in the undergraduate and graduate schools. I have taught piano and choral music in the public schools and in private music studios. I have also taught Social Studies, U.S. History, and World History in the secondary school and high school.

Education: I have a Ph. D. in foundations of education (history, sociology, anthropology, and philosophy of education) with minor in educational psychology. I have two master’s degrees: Master of Arts (MA) in American Culture Studies – history emphasis; and Master of Music (MM) in Music education – piano emphasis. I graduated my Bachelor of Music Education (BME) degree – piano emphasis -- with Magna Cum Laude. My tutorial goal is to help students to achieve success at their highest potentials. With the goal of high level success, I utilize different instructional approaches to improve students’ understanding and performance. I assign homework at the end of every lesson, and monitor students’ progress through intermittent assessment.

I have a Master of Arts (MA) degree in American Culture Studies with emphasis in history. I have taught Secondary School Social Studies as well as High School U.S. History and World History for a total of 4 years. My teaching/tutorial goal is to help students to understand cause and effect relationships, and to develop analytical skills needed to achieve high in AP history and other standardized tests.

Additionally, I coach students in planning/writing research papers and extended research -- thesis (special fee applies), utilizing qualitative research and mixed methods. With the goal of high level success, I utilize different instructional approaches to improve students’ understanding and performance. I assign homework at the end of every lesson, and monitor students’ progress through intermittent assessment.

I have Master of Music (MM) in Music education – piano emphasis; and Bachelor of Music Education (BME), Magna Cum Laude – piano emphasis. I specialized in teaching beginning to intermediate piano. I have taught piano and choral music for 10 years in the public schools and in private music studios. My teaching/coaching goal is to help students to develop important skills in piano, which includes a good understanding of music theory -- the ability to read music, understanding/interpreting musical signs and symbols, be able to transpose music, and understand/utilize chord structures. My ultimate goal is to give students a solid foundation in playing the piano and in love of music in general – which could lead to more studies in music, and developing skills that could be applied to other areas of learning. I assign homework at the end of every lesson, and monitor students’ progress through intermittent assessment.

I am available for tutoring from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I also teach on weekends -- by appointment. I can travel to the students or meet them online.

I offer discounts for group lessons and for students who travel to my studio location.

I sincerely look forward to helping you achieve a high level success in social studies, history, piano, and general music.
