The University of Houston-Downtown (Biology)
I am biology major with laboratory experience. As an undergraduate, I did research in a molecular laboratory and took courses in Genetics, Organic Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Statistics, Advanced Molecular Lab Techniques, and executive officer in the Microbiology club. I supported myself during school by working as a substitute teacher. I substitute taught in all subjects and all grades. I became the district tutor for the AP and Dual Credit Biology students and was assigned to long-term position in an elementary school for my last 2 years as a substitute. In the elementary, I worked with the behavioral specialist, reading specialist, and mathematics specialist doing pull outs (small group) mentoring and tutoring. After earning my Bachelor's degree I began working at MD Anderson Cancer Center where I was eventually promoted to laboratory supervisor. I also taught Anatomy and Physiology in a high school.
I am a life long learner with a passion for science. My role in all of my jobs has always been as a role model, teacher, or trainer. I like to help others reach their potential and become determined to get my students to a higher level. I was the first in my family to finish high school and earn a degree. I understand the struggle of getting through school and try to pass on my own experiences to help guide the student.
I have experience teaching and tutoring in math classes. I took AP Calculus in high school and Pre-Calculus in college. I also have practical experience with mathematics from working in and studying in various labs.
I have a lot of laboratory experience and so have a hands on perspective. I have dissected animals and taught Anatomy and Physiology at the high school level. I have a comprehensive knowledge of molecular biology which is the basis of genetics.
I am reasonably relaxed tutor who will work hard to explain things in as many different ways that I can. I look forward to working with you to get you to realize your potential. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Taken college level math courses. Have earned my BS in Biology.
I have earned a BS in Biology with many upper level courses taken which had a genetic basis. These classes include: BIOL 3303-Genetics, BIOL 4310-Human Genetics, BIOL 4320-Cellular Biology, BIOL 4330-Molecular Biology, BIOL 4230-Advanced Laboratory Techniques in Cellular and Molecular Biology. I also did undergraduate research in a molecular biology lab with a presentation of my research. My research included extracting DNA from soil samples in order to probe for and replicate fungal DNA, if found. I have hands on experience with DNA cloning, electrophoresis, gel interpretations, and DNA preparations.
