Hello! My name is Shannon F., and I am looking to tutor new students in the West Houston/Sugar Land area. I have experience tutoring one-on-one, and I also am currently in my sixth year of teaching at an International Studies Magnet School in HISD. Currently, I am certified in English/Language Arts (Grades 8-12), Social Studies (Grades 8-12), and ESL.
If you are looking for a noticeable difference in grades, skills, or test scores, I am the tutor for you. I have taught English in a rigorous Magnet school for six years. I have been the department head of the English Department at my school for three years. I have test scores to show above average "student growth" on the English II STAAR exam, which has resulted in my label as a "Highly Effective" teacher from my district. I consider myself an expert at proofreading essays and helping students create the best writing they can!
I have also studied Education in Finland this past summer, so I am newly invigorated with fresh ideas! Students' improvement comes from and individualization of education, not standardization. I strive to reach every student I teach by making content fun and engaging, while breaking it down so it is easy to grasp. Because I have experience teaching a wide range of subjects and grades (from remedial reading to AP level), I can assist with more than one class or student.
Please contact me with any questions you have. I am a fun and energetic teacher, and I am looking forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your goals! Hello! $50 per hour is my usual rate, but I would be willing to lower my cost for groups, students who are located near my neighborhood, or for people who plan more than one session in advance.
My daughter only has had one session with Shannon, but already feels so much better about her reading. Shannon showed her some tips on how to read for content and outline what she was reading. So far, we are really pleased.
I have 15 hours of Classics courses from The University of Texas at Austin, and I received an A in each of the classes. I have also taught World History in high school, which includes the history of Ancient Greece, Rome, Israel, Mesopotamia, and the Byzantine Empire. I was a member of the History Honors Society because of my GPA, which was a 3.85 at UT Austin. I also continue my own education in this subject by reading about and studying the Augustan Culture of Ancient Rome.
I am ESL certified by the state of Texas, and I teach ESL students at my high school.
I taught a Capstone course at my school, which is required for our magnet program. In this course, the seniors had to give speeches about a global issue once a week, and I would give them specific feedback. This course was the speech course at my school, which is required for graduation in Texas.
