Hello! The 2018-2019 school year will be my 20th school year working in Elementary and Special Education. During the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, I was a Substitute Teacher with Cy-Fair ISD. I have been a Wyzant tutor since the Fall of 2016. From 2000 to 2016, I was an Elementary School Special Ed. Resource Teacher in Houston ISD and was the Special Ed. Department Chairperson at my school for 10 of those years while teaching. During the 1999 - 2000 school year, I worked at a Private school with students in K to 8th grades and I also worked in Houston ISD as a Substitute Teacher.

I am a native Houstonian and graduate of the University of Houston. I have also recently completed 12 courses in Special Education Advocacy through the National Special Education Advocacy Institute. I personally use 504 Accommodations (tinted/colored lenses for Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome). I also have a diagnosis of Celiac Disease and I understand students with specific dietary needs and allergies.

As your child's tutor, I will give them one-on-one attention during the sessions. I will work with them to be successful and to build confidence. I use active listening/positive communication techniques and I like to talk with students. I believe that students should have choices in their learning. I believe that natural and incandescent lighting (not fluorescent) are best for learning and for visually intensive tasks like reading and writing.

During the Wyzant tutoring sessions, I have helped students with the following :
* Completing homework, unfinished class work, and projects - Make Homework Time in the evenings or on weekends less frustrating and more relaxed
* Building confidence in Reading for Pre-K, Kinder, First Graders and Beginning Readers by building sight word recognition using pictures, coloring, cutting, pasting, and writing along with practice of the letters and sounds
* Reinforcing what your child is working on during the school day
* Reading to and / or with your child to build fluency and confidence
* STAAR Test review of content and test taking strategies

I am certified in Special Education and ESL for grades Pre-K to Grade 12. I have experience working with students with various disabilities including Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech Impairment, ADHD/ADD, Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury, Intellectual Disability, and Emotional Disturbance.

Please contact me with any questions and to schedule a session.

I look forward to working with you and your child!

I have a Texas Teacher's certificate in Special Education for Grades Pre-K to 12. I was a Special Ed. Resource teacher in Houston ISD for 17 years. I instructed students in small groups in the Resource room and in their General Ed. classrooms during In-Class support. For example, during the 2015 - 2016 school year, 30 % of my caseload were students with ADD/ADHD. Methods that work well with these students are frequent breaks, opportunities for movement, having choices in their learning, break assignments into smaller chunks, positive reinforcement, opportunity to earn incentives, and use a timer to keep students on task.
