About Thomas

I am an experienced ESL/GED teacher and tutor.

I teach eighteen (18) hours a week for the Harris County Department of Education. All of my students are adults from Central and South America, the Caribbean and various African countries.

Most of these students are not employed or have entry-level jobs. Even though my classes may be large, I work with my students in small groups or individually to make sure that they have learned the basic and necessary English speaking, reading and writing skills to apply for new or better jobs.

I also tutor a small group of ESL students several times a week, at my local church and library. I adapt various teaching and tutoring styles and lessons to each students individual goals. These students have applied for US citizenship and want to improve their English skills to pass the test, be able to talk to their children's teachers and their health care providers.

I was fortunate to have a broad, liberal arts education at San Diego State University and the University of Houston. I realized quickly that I needed business-related courses to obtain, build and maintain a Corporate career. I took several accounting, marketing, and advanced math courses at night. During my career, I was responsible for teaching my fellow employees how to use various software applications (MS Office, 3rd party accounting and claims management).

Both my liberal arts and business education have served me well. I retired in November 2015, but remain more active than ever teaching and tutoring, and am involved in local and national politics.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught various ESL levels, from level one (1) where no or minimal English is spoken, to level four (4) where we concentrate on reading, writing and pronunciation.

GED

I am a GED Language Arts teacher, employed by the Harris County (Texas) Department of Education.

English is the second language for most of my students. My teaching includes testing before instruction begins to identify areas of weakness (speaking, writing, comprehension, vocabulary) and post-instruction testing to ensure progress has been made.

I offer tutoring between class sessions to strengthen identified weaknesses. After passing the GED (4 sections), I tutor students to prepare for TOEFL.

Grammar

I am an experience ESL and GED Language Arts teacher. I also tutor students, one on one, upon request. I have tutored students born in the USA, and other countries in Central and South America.

Reading

I teach and tutor ESL and GED students. I work with my students closely to instill a love of reading, both aloud and to themselves. They quickly gain confidence in their reading abilities, which leads them to be open and curious to learning. I encourage my students to read in English as often as possible.

SAT Reading

I am an experienced GED Language Arts teacher. Most of my new students are poor readers. I have been successful in identifying areas of improvement and have a proven track record of progress. I am confident that I can apply these teaching methods to SAT students, too.

TOEFL

I am now tutoring three (3) students for the TOEFL -- I am an experienced ESL and GED Language Arts teacher and tutor -- my students have been from Central and South America, France, Spain and several counties in Africa

Vocabulary

I tutor students whose first language is not English. I have found that it is very helpful to have a large vocabulary. I am constantly challenged to present simpler or more complex words to explain an unfamiliar word or concept. I feel fortunate that I can recall these words with little effort, but do have to rely occasionally on dictionary apps on my I-Phone.
