About Amanda

Welcome to my profile!

My purpose here is to help you overcome your challenges in learning science and performing well on the Science Portion of the ACT Test!

In my professional career as a science educator, I have taught and planned yearlong curriculums for all core subjects specializing in Earth, Physical Science, Biology with emphasis in the area of Ecology. I am certified as a Highly Qualified Science Teacher through the Texas Education Agency - grades 4-12, and previously in the State of Michigan where I taught high school and middle school for nearly a decade in the City of Detroit and other suburban settings within the Metro Detroit area.

In my experience as a secondary level educator, I have found that science subjects, particularly chemistry and physics, can be intimidating for students at times. My professional development training in real life project- based and interdisciplinary instructional strategies helps bring the relevance and validity of these subjects to light for students to better engage in and rationalize their willingness to succeed.

I have also worked with Special Ed populations of students to coincide with providing accommodations and modifications per their IEP's and 504 plans. Additionally, I am familiar with several online websites that demonstrate animations and simulations to help reinforce the technicalities of these subjects that will be found on district and state tests such as the Texas STAAR Test.

Each subject of science contains a set of standards in which specific concepts, skills, and applications apply. It helps to discuss the specific needs ahead of time to better guide the instruction to coincide with more of a focused learning process. Noted on my profile is a schedule of availability, however I may be able to accommodate additional days and times outside of what is listed.

When you contact me, please indicate specific topics within the subject that you are needing assistance in so that I am better able to design specific lessons isolating the topic(s) you are in need of assistance.

Ex. Chemistry: Balancing Chemical Reactions; Dimensional Analysis Conversions, Atomic Structures; Periodic Table trends; Chemical Bonding; Solutions and Concentrations; Calculating Formula/Molar Mass; etc.

The ACT Standardized Test is typically used for admission to college. Through professional development and my own research, I am well equipped to provide students with strategies for taking the Science portion of the ACT test. During my teaching career, my students overall average Science Composite score was a 20 at the 11th grade level in a region where the local composite score was an abysmal average of 13. Through the EPAS (Explore, Plan, ACT, SAT) sequence, I was the driving force of elevating my students science composite score from an average of 14 in their 9th grade year, to a 20 in their junior year.

Finally, I have completed an intense series of Masters Degree coursework in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education at Michigan State University. My program of study was directed toward the history and development of higher education, research dedicated to best practice academic advising and student retention strategies, leading teacher learning, and workforce development practices. Therefore, I am well prepared to assist undergraduate college students in these areas of science, in addition to Major/Minor Program Selection, Admissions Applications, Financial Aid FAFSA forms, and Academic Advising in General.

I prefer public places such at coffee shops with internet access or public libraries.

I look forward to working with you and bringing you through the challenges the science subjects can sometimes present. We all have our strengths and weakness, so please don't hesitate to reach out for assistance and allow me to help you turn an academic challenge into a strength!

Sincerely,

Ms. Amanda M.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
