I've always loved learning, and I love to teach. I've been a tutor for about five years. I worked for Sylvan in Austin as a test prep tutor, and I've been a writing tutor for elementary and middle school students. I also home-tutored a middle school student from another country, whom I helped with English as a Second Language two or three times per week for two years. I then helped a 6th grader from Asia improve her study skills for social studies, language arts and science classes. Both students got on the honor roll afterwards.
On the college level, I taught an editing course at UT-Austin, and I taught Essentials of College Writing in a classroom for the University of Phoenix.
At a private high school, I taught journalism, and at a public high school in Austin, I worked full-time tutoring students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade who wanted to enhance their standardized test scores. As a substitute teacher in Austin ISD and Leander ISD, I taught classes in language arts, journalism, science and other subjects, and I worked with students in a special needs classroom. In the last couple of years, I've tutored elementary school students in language arts and reading through private tutoring centers, and through a joint program with Austin ISD and ACC, I also taught adult ESL classes.
I like to use a positive, holistic approach, which takes into account a student's personality, interests, background, needs and goals. I've studied how learning occurs, so I believe that rather than "stuffing" dry knowledge into a student's head regardless of learning style or needs, it's most effective to make the topic come alive by breaking it down into understandable components. I give easy-to-remember homework assignments, and I use "friendly" assessments and progress reports.
My hours are flexible. I look forward to working with you and helping you succeed! I've always loved learning, and I love to teach. I've been a tutor for about five years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed nine years of formal Bible study at Bible Study Fellowship, and I have done other in-depth Bible studies, such as Beth Moore. I have taught small groups at churches, along with preschool and elementary school Sunday school classes. I also do Bible studies on my own, and I can create lesson plans or use existing ones.
I've been cooking since I was eight years old, and I have worked in kitchens at several restaurants, where I did prep work and baking. I have taught my nieces how to bake pies, cakes and cookies, and I use several cookbooks for children.
