About Talia

Hello, All! For the past four years I have been a contracted private tutor with an in-home tutoring company in the Houston Area for mathematics, science and SAT Prep but I have tutored in New England and in California as well both privately and in high school & university tutoring labs. Working with students ranging from 4th grade to graduate school, coming from various walks of life and having unique academic goals has allowed me the ability to adapt to any learning style from which the student will benefit. Adding to the diversity of students I’ve worked with, I’ve had valuable experience working with students with learning disabilities such as dyscalculia, dyslexia, attention-deficit disorder as well as developmental disorders such as autism.

I have found that the most significant component to the success of one-on-one tutoring is to listen to, and respect, the particular needs and wants of each student, rather than push onto them my own personal learning preferences. To me, success is achieved when a student can teach me the topics we have covered at the end of our tutorials. By using visual aids and interactive discussions, my goal is to encourage students to attain a high level of conceptual understanding of the subject being reviewed in a way that makes sense to them, rather than help them to memorize information that will soon be forgotten.

I have many years’ experience tutoring mathematics from elementary math to calculus I in both an individual and group setting as well as various courses in the sciences including biology, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry and biochemistry for middle school, high school and college students. In addition, I have three years’ experience tutoring SAT Prep in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Although I am a recent graduate, earning a B.S. in Biochemical & Biophysical Science with a minor in chemistry from the University of Houston, I have over 4 years of professional experience in the scientific field which I use to enrich my tutorials. My experience speaking at medical conferences to present my undergraduate research in anti-cancer therapy allows me to help prepare students for real-world applications of their studies as well.

To enhance the learning experience I try to keep a very flexible and open schedule for tutorials. I encourage you to message me with any questions you may have regarding my experience in a particular subject or to schedule a tutorial with me! To keep everything nice and organized, I do prefer a 20-hour cancellation for any scheduled tutorials; that way I can open my availability to another student if needed. I greatly look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

For four years I have worked with Houston students in their algebra courses often times tutoring them for both levels. Every student I have worked with in algebra has received an A average by the end of tutorials as I work diligently to ensure the students truly learn the material rather than just memorize it.

Algebra 2

Primarily I am a science and mathematics tutor, with over three years of experience tutoring Houston students in subjects like algebra 1 and 2. I have earned all of my students a minimum of a B+, regardless of what their grade was at when we began tutorials, with 97% of students ending with an A in their algebra course. I keep tutorials hands on with emphasis on practicing problems of various difficulty levels to exercise the students' knowledge in each topic.

Biology

Earning a B.S. in biochemistry and biophysics has afforded me advanced knowledge in the field of biological science. I've added to this knowledge base with 3+ years professional experience in biomedical labs & scientific research fellowships. Science should be interactive so I like to get the students I tutor involved in the discussion of the growing field of biology so that they can truly learn about the science of life.

Chemistry

For 4 years now I have helped many students at the college and high school levels receive an A average in their chemistry courses for both general chemistry and organic chemistry. I have taken all levels of chemistry in order to receive my B.S. in biochemical and biophysical science with a minor in chemistry. I also did a two-year fellowship in medicinal chemistry and was even able to present my research at medical conferences around the country. I have found many resources over the years to help aid in the understanding of concepts in chemistry which I like to use during tutorials.

Organic Chemistry

I graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Biochemistry and Biophysics, having taken all levels of chemistry, acing both Organic chemistry 1 and 2. I have tutored Organic chemistry for the past two and a half years and have earned my students an A average each time. Organic chemistry is my favorite subject to tutor and I have very well prepared notes on all topics from the first and second college level course.

Physics

I have three years of experience tutoring high school physics, college-level general physics and calculus-based university physics. I received a B.S. in biochemistry and biophysics which required heavily physics-based coursework.

Precalculus

I have had many years experience tutoring students in mathematics through both group and one-on-one tutorials. Each year I am able to work with students at the high school and college level in the area of pre-calculus, preparing them for future courses in mathematics. I have experience working with students from all academic backgrounds and levels of this course (i.e., Pre-AP and AP) so I am very familiar with the curriculum.

My daughter had a wonderful session with Talia. She actually got ahead in Algebra and completed her Physics work. She felt so good about herself and is so happy to have found Talia!
