About Yasmin

I am a certified teacher from Houston, TX. Teaching is my passion. My goal is to make my students successful. I believe that every child can learn, and has its own unique learning style. I have Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. I have been teaching for ten years. I have variety of experience in teaching different grade levels. I have also taught abroad for five years. I love teaching!

I teach my students with different cognitive strategies based on their learning styles. In reading, I use critical reading strategies and study skills holistically to enhance their ability and to improve their grades from D or F to A. In Math, I use different different analytic strategies to comprehend the question, and then solve it in steps. In Math, I make my students master in computation skills, word problem, and algebraic problems or geometric problems using thinking tools, mental math or drawing pictures. Comprehension is the key! I Writing is fun. I teach my students to use mental procedure to control the production of writing. My goal is to make my students successful in writing by giving them right tools.

I motivate my students and keep them challenged and engaged in learning. I connect the learning with real life situation. Students feel bored when they don't know what they are leaning and why they are learning. They loose their interest in Math when they have to drill boring problem. They feel overwhelmed and show lack of interest in Math when we ask them to do challenging and discovery problems all the time, but we don't give them ample opportunities to think back and practice the problems or strategies that they have already discovered. Think back and Practice is the key!

I am usually available every evening after 5:00 pm. On the weekends, I am available any time morning or noon or evening. My preference is to meet at my home or in the library because I have so much teaching material and resources at my home. My rate is $40/ hr.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade.

I have an extensive experience of teaching common core subjects to a variety of grade levels from prek-12 grades. These common core subjects are connected and interrelated together.Beginning in grade 6, the literacy standards allow teachers of ELA, history/social studies, science, and technical subjects to use their content area expertise to help students meet the particular challenges of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language in their respective fields. The skills and knowledge captured in the ELA/literacy standards are designed to prepare students for life outside the classroom. They include critical-thinking skills and the ability to closely and attentively read texts in a way that will help them understand and enjoy complex works of literature. Students will learn to use cogent reasoning and evidence collection skills that are essential for success in college, career, and life.

I will not only teach my students common core, but I will also coach and mentor and facilitate them in order to be successful. Common core subjects are the base of a student's success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher from the State of TX. I have taught a variety of grade levels from Pre-Kinder to 6th grades for more than eleven years. As a teacher, I know the students personality characteristic. I can build self-esteem in them by creating a safe environment in order for them to produce results better.

Elementary Math

I have an experience of teaching Math in 2nd and 3rd grade for nine years.

I facilitate and promote students in English and grammar by explicitly teaching them the content of grammar. Students are able to identify if the text is readable, accurate and ready for publication. They work on publications of all kinds, including books, newspapers and magazines.

I invite students to use the following thinking process:
* check text to ensure it is well written and logically structured
* correct grammar and spelling
* ensure the text is in line with the publisher's 'house style'
* check facts and raise queries with the author
* look out for potential legal problems and discuss them with the publisher
* check illustrations and captions are correct.

As a grammar tutor, I scaffold students in correct pronunciation, parts of speech, noun, morphology, verb morphology, subject / verbs agreement, rules for basic verb tenses, basic writing conventions, coordination and subordination, fragments, comma splices, and fused sentences, punctuation marks, confusing words, spelling errors, topic sentences.

I also tutor students to make them successful in a variety of writing processes and writing genres, such as- thesis statements; introduction/body/conclusion paragraphs, rhetorical modes, writing processes, writing evaluation standards and techniques, vocabulary and language expression, computer-aided instruction techniques, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) methodology.

I use research based handwriting strategy- Writing without Tears. Handwriting is taught from Prekindergarten. Students learn about curves and lines that are the fundamentals of hand writing. Developmentally appropriate hand writing techniques have become increasingly important as our children are facing national higher educational standards. I use multi sensory techniques to enhance hand writing and to make learning fun.
I monitor and encourage my students to focus on their fine motor skill development. It addresses posture, grip, and correct positioning,
In lower elementary grades prekindergarten to first, lines and curves ( Handwriting without Tears technique) plays an important role to differentiate different formation of letters and styles such as - curve letters, tall letters etc. Students can manipulate these wooden sticks to practice writing different letters. It is a great multi-sensory technique. Students have fun practice writing on 3 or lined journal. In prekindergarten, students are not required to use lined papers.
In upper grades, students use cursive handwriting. We start cursive handwriting start in 2nd grade. As a teacher, I believe that cursive handwriting plays an important role in students' learning. Research shows that students ,who use cursive handwriting, have the skill to develop their own personalized writing style. This technique helps students to communicate fluently and quickly throughout their lifetime.
Additionally, the ability to write in cursive writing enables students to complete their assignments quickly, and take their tests in a timely manner.
Moreover, direct teaching is more important. I model students every time before I teach them a writing lesson. Modeling and direct teaching is the key. Then,I give my students ample opportunities to practice the skill that I taught them.
As a teacher, my goal is for students to write legibly with speed and consistency. Writing without Tears helps students to learn writing effectively, easily and automatically.

I have an extensive experience in teaching Phonics. Phonics start from Pre-K. Phonics is the fundamental component in reading. Phonics is one of the primary building blocks of reading. Without an understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds, reading cannot occur. This multifaceted connection between print and pronunciation is an important component of any instructional program in reading because it provides readers with tools for discovering new written words. The correspondence between letters and sounds presents itself in several different ways. While letters remain the same, sound comes in different units: syllables, onsets and rimes and phonemes. Each syllable is made up of an onset, a rime or a combination of both. An onset is any consonants presented before a vowel in a syllable.

I am an elementary school teacher, and I am a certified teacher for elementary grades.I have taught for 10 years in elementary schools. I have taught various grade level students in reading, writing and math. I have a variety of teaching experience.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills in all of the grades. Study skills are not limited to a grade level. They are established across the grade levels based on each student's need and grade level. I believe that students who have a good grasp of study skills, they tend to more successful than those who are unfamiliar with the study skills.Study skills are the skills you need to enable you to study and learn efficiently – they are an important set of transferable life skills.Study skills are not subject specific - they are generic and can be used when studying any area.
Study skills are transferable - you will take them with you beyond your education into new contexts. For example, organisational skills, time management, prioritising, learning how to analyse, problem solving, and the self-discipline that is required to remain motivated. Study skills relate closely to the type of skills that employers look for.
